PILOT PLANT RESEARCH ENGINEER (1804318) - WYANDOTTE, MI WHERE THE CHEMISTRY HAPPENS Research Engineering Services (RES) in Wyandotte MI is responsible for the premier piloting facility of North America. RES seeks a highly experienced Pilot Plant Research Engineer with expertise in process research & product development, as well as, scale-up to support our BASF business partners across North America. This is an expert role within the Global Advanced Materials and Systems research group that specializes in bench scale, piloting and small-scale production. We use new and existing technologies to process a variety of hazardous materials in flexible equipment arrangements to bring new and innovative solutions. This position will be involved in many challenging projects and is responsible for supporting business unit technologies and activities, including consulting, experimental testing, pilot scale development, and repetitive manufacturing. QUALIFICATIONS - BASF RECOGNIZES INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION WHICH ARE ACCREDITED BY THE COUNCIL FOR HIGHER EDUCATION ACCREDITATION OR EQUIVALENT FORMULA FOR SUCCESS Leveraging your education in Chemical Engineering or relevant discipline, combined with your professional chemical processing experience (preferably in pilot plant or market development), you will plan and safely run pilot plant projects (primarily with organic chemistry and polymerization) for technology demonstration and data generation. Demonstrating competencies in relevant technical subjects utilized in process development, design and scale-up of chemical processes, sizing equipment, you will develop operating disciplines and safe operating procedures for pilot plant trials and repetitive manufacturing. Successfully engaging across the business, you will partner with business groups, colleagues, process research chemists and engineers to discover, co-develop and scale-up manufacturing processes to meet our business needs within specified project timeline. As a trusted advisor, you will identify and evaluate improvement opportunities and optimize pilot plant assets and equipment, as well as develop and execute action plans, designed to reduce safety risks, improve overall performance, and to ensure continuous improvement. Collaborating with cross-functional professionals, you will demonstrate initiative by suggesting and implementing lab improvement projects through application of new practices, Testing techniques or equipment. Ensure compliance with Process Safety Management requirements for PSM covered units, assess safety procedures/policies, and participate in the HAZOP process. Valuing a high degree of safety consciousness such as MSDS, chemical storage, waste disposal, proper handling of toxic or hazardous materials and knowledge of safe laboratory operating principles and practices. Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%. Prior experience with experimentation tools and DOE testing techniques, chemical engineering unit operations and reactor design, reaction engineering or reaction modeling experience, such as ASPEN, or small scale pilot plant operations is highly desired. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Partner with product development, commercial implementation, manufacturing, process research chemists and engineers to discover, co-develop and scale-up manufacturing processes to meet business within specified project timeline - Provide broad based engineering support to colleagues, technicians, and community - Lead and facilitate meetings and reviews including driving the safety review of start-ups and new processes. - Guide Coordinator and Technicians, and work with building support staff to setup and troubleshoot and operate processes and equipment - Develop operating disciplines and safe operating procedures for pilot plant trials and repetitive manufacturing - Supply Market introductory quantities and R&D developmental quantities of new products - Plan and safely run pilot plant projects for technology demonstration and data generation. Properly document environmental emissions, waste disposal, and equipment cleaning - Understand hazard evaluations and risk mitigation techniques for hazardous operation identification - Work closely with production portion of the facility and communicate process intentions and hazards to the non-pilot plant personnel to ensure safe operations - Reduce creative ideas into new, practical, value-added projects. Candidate must be able to problem-solve by generating novel ideas and by creatively applying existing technology - Demonstrate initiative by suggesting and implementing lab improvement projects through application of new safe practices, testing techniques or equipment - Ensure compliance with Process Safety Management requirements for PSM covered units - Assess safety procedures and policies, participate in HAZOP process - Implement operational policy and procedure, such as development and revision of SOP's - Identify and evaluate improvement opportunities and optimize pilot plant assets and equipment - Contribute to operations training to improve technical knowledge of technicians - Collaborate with team members to accomplish organizational goals; provide ideas to improve efficiency at group level - Act as the manufacturing representative to capital projects CREATE YOUR OWN CHEMISTRY: WHAT WE OFFER YOU Adding value to our customers begins with adding value to you.
