Description:
Heavy Duty Mechanical Knowledge of engines through suspension.
Repairs and replaces defective and worn parts in City vehicles, such as starters, alternators, brakes, batteries, belts, hoses and tires. Performs minor electrical work.
Performs preventive maintenance functions including changing oil and oil filters and performing engine tune-ups. Performs simple bodywork and paints damaged sections of the automobile.
Cleans and maintains equipment and shop tools.
Performs housekeeping duties. Assists with various projects as requested.
Must furnish own hand tools.
Responds to complex reports of operational/condition issues with vehicles and equipment.
Performs systems testing and diagnostics to determine cause and course of repair action.
Performs failed vehicle and equipment components of limited complexity. Rebuilds vehicle and equipment components of limited complexity as needed.
Services vehicles and equipment as needed at garages and at off-site locations.
Orders parts and updates/completes work orders according to standard operating procedures.
Uses tools and equipment such as electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, tire changers, bench grinders, pressure washers, hoists, jacks, and a variety of hand and power tools.
KNOWLEDGE: Requires a high school degree or a GED certificate. May require up to 18 months of vocational education/training in automotive maintenance or repair (i.e., NIASE). Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving .EXPERIENCE: One year of automotive maintenance and repair experience is required. License: will require a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred or obtained within 6- months of employment. Must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time .WORK ENVIRONMENT: There are occasional exposures to extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases and substances, and/or contagious diseases or physical trauma conditions of a short-term disabling nature, such as broken bones or temporary loss of sight or hearing .PHYSICAL SKILL: Requires the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements within fairly fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within moderate tolerance demands.
