    For over 50 years, BRC has been one of New York City’s leading nonprofit organizations committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness. BRC provides caring and effective services and housing to more than 10,000 individuals each year. Employing a holistic approach, BRC operates more than 30 programs ranging from outreach to the unsheltered, transitional housing and shelter, permanent housing, substance abuse treatment, mental and physical health services, and workforce development and senior services. Headquartered in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, BRC has approximately 1,600 employees and an operating budget of more than $200 million. BRC operates its programs across the entirety of New York City.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES AND PRIORITIES

     

    Reporting directly to the CEO, and working closely with various members of BRC’s Senior Staff (of which they are a member), the Director of External Affairs is BRC’s primary liasion to community stakeholders including residential and business neighbors of our programs, community boards, elected officials and their staffs, the intergovernmental staff of government agencies, civic associations, and other peers. Their responsibilies will include, but not be limited to the following:

    • serve as the initial (and often frequent and ongoing) point of contact for two-way information sharing with the above referenced community members,
    • be responsible for developing and disseminatiung information to, and receiving and responding to information from, these variuous constuencies,
    • regularly convene and/or attend meetings (which frequently occur in the evening) with these stakeholders for this purpose,
    • develop and maintain effective channels of communication and collaboration with government agencies with which BRC contracts,
    • work with the CEO, Chief Program Officer, Chief Adminsitrative Officer, Chief Real Estate Development Officer, Program Division Vice Presidents and Program Directors as appropriate to fulfill their responsibiliites.

    IDEAL EXPERIENCE AND CHARACTERISTICS

    • Minimum 3 years experience working in a community/government relations/external relations capacity.
    • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Skilled at diplomacy, including active listening that ensures others feel heard, while staying cool under pressure.
    • A demonstrable commitment to BRC’s mission.
    • Demonstrated commitment to helping achieve greater social justice and equity for people who endured discrimination and marginalization.
    • Familiarity with NYC government and community institutions and practices.
    • Knowledge of New York City and State governmental agencies and processes.
    • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
    • Impeccable integrity and professionalism, and sound judgment.
    • College degree preferred, but alterative experiences will be considered.

     

    Location/hours:

    • Based at BRC’s Chelsea HQ; occasional opportunity for remote work, but responsibilities assume full-time on-site presence.
    • 37.5 hours per week with expectation for flexibility to work evenings and occasional weekends as required.
