Background Investigator
Status: Conditional – Pending Contract Award Classification: Investigator (W-2 or Independent Contractor, TBD)
Role Overview
Background Investigators will conduct comprehensive pre-employment background investigations for sworn and civilian Fire Department candidates in accordance with City of Oakland requirements and under the supervision of the Lead Background Investigator.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct full-scope background investigations from initiation through completion
Review and validate candidate Personal History Statements
Perform candidate interviews and documentation reviews
Verify employment, education, licenses, and professional references
Conduct criminal, civil, DMV, SSN trace, and related record checks
Collect and document required photographs and identifying materials
Maintain detailed, accurate investigative files
Meet required turnaround times, including academy surge periods
Comply with all City, state, and federal regulations governing investigations
Required Qualifications
Prior experience in background investigations, law enforcement, or related investigative work
Familiarity with FCRA and investigative consumer report requirements
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple investigations simultaneously
Commitment to confidentiality and data security standards
