Job Description
Position Summary: Bartenders at Calypso Bar & Grill are responsible for delivering exceptional guest experiences through outstanding beverage service, product knowledge, and upbeat hospitality. This position requires strong multitasking skills, accuracy under pressure, and the ability to maintain Calypso’s fun, coastal-energetic atmosphere while upholding all company service and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Guest Service & Hospitality
Greet guests promptly with a friendly, positive attitude that reflects Calypso’s oceanfront hospitality.
Provide knowledgeable recommendations on cocktails, beer, wine, food items, and daily specials.
Engage with guests to create a welcoming, social bar environment.
Monitor guest satisfaction and proactively resolve concerns.
Bartending & Beverage Execution
Prepare and serve cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages according to Calypso recipes and portion standards.
Maintain a high level of accuracy and consistency with pours; follow all comp and discount procedures.
Operate the POS system quickly and correctly; manage tabs and collect payment.
Maintain clean, organized bar stations—including garnishes, ice, tools, and stock.
Restock beer, liquor, mixers, glassware, and supplies throughout the shift.
Cleanliness, Safety & Compliance
Follow all ABC laws and company policies regarding responsible alcohol service.
Check IDs and refuse service when necessary to protect guest safety.
Maintain sanitation standards: wipe surfaces, clean spills, polish glassware, and ensure bar areas meet Health Department requirements.
Support opening, closing, and side-work duties as assigned.
Teamwork & Communication
Work closely with servers, barbacks, food runners, and management to ensure smooth service flow.
Communicate 86’d items, special requests, and guest issues promptly.
Assist in training new staff when needed.
Contribute to a positive, solution-oriented team culture.
Qualifications
Previous bartending experience preferred; high-volume or beach-front experience a plus.
Strong knowledge of cocktails, spirits, beer, and wine.
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication and guest-service skills.
Must be at least 21 years old and able to obtain/maintain VA ABC certifications.
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and stand for extended periods.
Shift Expectations
Nights, weekends, and holidays required—especially during peak season.
Must arrive in proper uniform and follow Calypso grooming standards.
Reliability and punctuality are essential.
