GENERAL COUNSEL COMPANY PROFILE

Barvin is a privately held commercial real estate investment and development firm located in Houston, Texas owned by Houston-based entrepreneur Eric Barvin. Our commercial real estate platform serves as asset manager over a portfolio of multi-family residential properties totaling nearly 4,000 units located in Texas and Georgia. Barvin also has a construction management division and, in 2019, purchased two tracts of land to begin ground-up development of multi-family assets.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Barvin is seeking a highly motivated and experienced General Counsel to oversee and guide all Barivn’s legal issues related to real estate transactions (acquisitions, development, loans, etc.), personnel management, and general risk assessment. This role will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer while working closely with the remainder of the Barvin Executive team. The General Counsel will be responsible to facilitate Barvin’s expectations regarding all legal documents and activities. The duties of this position require a high degree of specialized expertise and skill in maintaining established standards of quality and accuracy. Drive, determination, and a self-disciplined approach to achieving results that meet these established criteria are necessary for successful job performance.

The role will be based in Houston, Texas with very little travel required.

EXPECTATIONS OF GENERAL COUNSEL

• Provide advice in relation to all legal aspects effecting the business, including but not limited to: employment law, acquisitions, dispositions, real estate development, leasing, multifamily housing, rental/occupancy issues, evictions, etc.
• Reviewing and advising regarding the acceptability of proposed contract terms.
• Ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, etc.
• Creation of applicable company policies, procedures, etc.
• Negotiating with external clients and vendors regarding contractual, legal, commercial, and risk related issues.
• Participating in the creation of commercial and legal strategies for key issues.
• Managing Barvin’s custom created legal documents; revisions, edits, risk analysis, etc.
• Participation and oversight in training and legal education on applicable topics.
• Provide input in a variety of decision-making processes to ensure Barvin’s Executive Team is aware of potential risks.
• Assist Barvin’s Executive Team in developing company policies, procedures, best practices, etc.
• Monitor, oversee, and assist with all required filings, notifications, deadlines, etc. created by legal documents.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, or a related field.
• Master’s degree in legal field.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• 5+ years of similar work experience in the real estate industry
