    Job Description

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    • The Safety Engineer will be responsible for system safety assessments for all Programs and Projects within the QD35 Vehicle System Branch of the Mission Systems Assurance for Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Directorate. Core responsibilities include contributing to the design and development of aerospace vehicle systems and processes from a safety perspective, documenting various system safety analyses, and assisting with safety-related requirements management.
    • Develop and utilize SMA-specific tools needed to assure that all applicable system safety requirements (e.g., Agency, Center, Program/Project, etc.) are identified for MSFC programs and projects.
    • Work with NASA Customer on the assignment and distribution of tasking across the team to include tracking/maintenance of System Safety Team responsibilities and information. Individual may be requested to travel to MAF/KSC for the upcoming vehicle integration in support of the SLS launch.
    • Candidate shall provide the QD35 Technical Lead/Branch Chief with critical information needed for task team assignments, knowledge where certain disciplines or skill sets reside within the greater team, assurance of evenly distributed work load, and ability to answer questions with regard to team capabilities.
    • Assist Vehicle Integration Team with the design/development of SLS compliance with Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) requirements. Apply system safety analysis techniques in the design of safety-critical products.
    • Conduct research to address problems associated with flight safety systems. Be knowledgeable of safety processes to include Inspection/Verification.
    • Ensure new systems (and those that have been repaired) meet requirements mandated by NASA and specifications set by manufacturers.
    • Provide technical and programmatic oversight of spacecraft subsystems.
    • Review and prepare engineering and system safety analysis, technical reports, engineering change proposals, verification data, and other documentation.
    • Prepare and maintain System Safety Analysis Reports (including Hazard Reports) by identifying and evaluating severity and probability of vehicle system hazards and cross-program hazards.
    • Coordinate with engineering, management and NASA Customer to exchange technical data to support the development of the safety analysis.
    • Review component Interface Design Document and Interface Control Documents to ensure completeness of safety analysis.
    • Perform system-level safety analysis and developed approaches for risk mitigation.
    • Ensure safety engineering support for program/project hardware/design milestone reviews through all phases of development (from concept through manufacturing to final acceptance) to ensure design compliance with safety requirements.
    • Perform and/or assess hazard analyses to assure that: (a) all hazards are identified and the associated risks properly characterized; (b) hazard controls satisfy applicable safety requirements and adequately mitigate safety risks; (c) safety verification requirements are clearly identified and adequate, including the clear definition of verification pass/fail criteria; and (d) the safety verification status is properly maintained in a closed loop accounting system. These tasks shall be performed for in-house and out-of-house design and development projects.
    • Assess test and operating procedures to assure compliance with safety controls and safety verification requirements.
    • Efforts include: engineering analysis of systems to identify and eliminate safety hazards, integrated hazards analysis, the systematic application of safety policies to the design of NASA human-rated hardware and assistance in the overall implementation of safety practices for systems/subsystems

    REQUIRED SKILLS:

    • BS in Engineering Education required
    • 1-3 Years of Experience
    • Must be a US citizen
    • Must be able to pass a national agency check
    • Must be able to pass pre-employment and periodic random drug and alcohol screenings.

    OTHER DESIRED SKILLS:

    Position requires a competent communicator (verbal and written) with ability to work harmoniously and effective with co-workers, Bastion Management and all levels of customer personnel. Required to be regular in attendance (per agreed to work hours schedule), consistently punctual and be relied upon to successfully complete all assignments.
