THE OPPORTUNITY FOR STAFF ACCOUNTANT
BAER is expanding its accounting capacity to meet new demands. The Staff Accountant will be instrumental in shaping the development of BAERI’s accounting capabilities. This position offers a meaningful opportunity for the successful candidate to be actively involved in the management of core, company-level financial data to support BAERI’s mission to improve the understanding of basic climate processes and how they impact global ecosystems as well as other specialized areas of research. Our business operations are unique, and this position demands a high-quality level of customer service, accuracy, efficiency, and integrity. The position will be based in our administrative offices located within the NASA Research Park at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View.
THE POSITION
The Staff Accountant will handle many of BAERI’s day-to-day financial operations and will help the financial team by working to fulfill BAERI’s fiscal reporting requirements, performing a variety of accounting tasks, and supporting our finance unit including payroll. The staff accounting duties include but are not limited to accounts payable, accounts receivable, month- end processing and account reconciliations. The Staff Accountant will be the primary bookkeeper for BAERI and will be responsible for journal entries and adjustments. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger maintenance, financial statement reporting, annual audit preparation, and support for budget and forecasting activities.
Compensation includes a competitive base salary along with health insurance benefits (including medical, dental, prescription drug, vision, disability, and life insurance benefits), eleven paid holidays annually, a generous vacation and sick-time accrual policy, an employer-funded 403b defined-contribution plan, and eligibility for optional participation in a 403b tax-deferred-annuity plan.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Responsibilities include:
Prepares all contract billings monthly by program
Collates back-up documentation for monthly invoices (monthly contract billings)
Responsible for accounts receivable
Prepares aging reports
Liaise with vendors and follow-up on late accounts
Helps to prepare for annual audits
Routinely conducts reconciliation of balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy
Monthly credit card reconciliation
Monthly bank reconciliation
Assists month-end and year-end close
Assists monthly journal entries
Assists with tax-related issues such as issuance of 1099’s
Maintains accounting filing systems (e.g. contracts, receipts, W-9’s, etc.)
Supports the BAERI Finance team with other projects as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
Three to five years’ experience in Accounting or Finance
QuickBooks experience is a must
ADP experience preferred
SAP Concur experience is a plus
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word)
Strong accounting and analytical capabilities
Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to effectively manage multiple competing priorities with minimal supervision
Willingness to be flexible and adaptable to change
Able to work as a team player
