  • Responsibilities

    The Embalmer is responsible to perform all activities required to correctly and respectfully embalm the deceased of a loved one.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Ensures all policies and procedures regarding identification, setting of features and care of the deceased are closely followed to ensure proper compliance in every area of the prep room’s operations including embalming, transporting, removals, dispatching and other activities; maintain 100% compliance in all areas.
    • Understands technical terminology and developments of embalming and restorative arts.
    • Demonstrates and practices highly technical embalming and restorative arts skills.
    • Knows when and how to apply an embalming or restorative arts technical skill or procedure.
    • Ensures care for deceased in a respectful manner while performing a variety of tasks.
    • Performs complex tasks in an area of expertise.
    • Complies with all policies and procedures regarding identification and embalming authorization of the deceased.
    • Responsible for caring for the deceased in a respectful manner while performing a variety of tasks including embalming, removals and transfers, cosmetology, dressing, hair styling and any other preparation required for the deceased.
    • Performs any other preparation required for human remains.
    • Adheres to all applicable professional, municipal, state/provincial and federal licensing authority regulations.
    • Promotes a safe work environment be being aware of, practicing universal precautions, and adopting general principles of safe conduct.
    • Assists with maintenance of preparation room and the facility.
    • Cleans soiled equipment and hazardous material spills.
    • Ensures hazardous materials and spills are handled in accordance with the Material Data Safety Sheets.
    • Assists with chemical and supply inventory.
    • Receives caskets and other funeral home supplies.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

    • Possess the technical ability to embalm all manner of cases.
    • High level of compassion and integrity
    • Good communication skills.
    • Problem solving skills.
    • Have an acceptance of death, even when it occurs in children or when caused by trauma.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
    • Completion of degree program at accredited mortuary college.
    • 2+ years’ experience as an Embalmer.
    • Knowledge of computers and some software including MS Office products.
    • Valid state issued Funeral Director/Embalmer license, as per state licensing requirement.
    • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Lifting and carrying up to 150 pounds and pushing/pulling up to 250 pounds.
    • Hazards associated with trade: possible exposure to communicable disease, blood borne pathogens, formaldehyde, and high temperature work environment in crematory.
    • May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
