    SR MECHANICAL ENGINEER, MECHANISM DESIGNER

    LOCATION:   REDWOOD CITY, CA

BEAR ROBOTICS is looking for a SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER who wants to play a key role in the development of our robot, Penny, at our headquarters in Redwood City, CA. Our company was founded in 2017 and has developed a robot that autonomously shuttles food from the kitchen out to customer tables and then brings dishes back for cleaning. We need engineers who can get our prototype into mass production, particularly ones with deep experience in mechanism design. If you want to work on interesting design and manufacturing challenges as an individual contributor with an A+ team, Bear Robotics is a perfect place for you.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    •  Brainstorm and prototype mechanized subsystem designs, with specific emphasis on robotic drivetrain components, such as drive wheels, casters and suspension
    • Perform mechanical analysis such as plotting kinematic paths and calculating static and dynamic forces and running finite element analysis (FEA)
    • Facilitate our transition from prototype design to production using principles from design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA)
    • Work with our vendors, contract manufacturers, metrology and quality control to generate and release drawings, bring up production level parts, review FAI reports, request tool modifications, etc.
    • Generate test plans and procedures for verifying the durability, life, corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance of components and subassemblies and then perform failure analysis to address issues
    • Collaborate with our manufacturing, product, field ops and software teams to ensure our robot meets all customer and engineering requirements
    • Ensure the design of our robot meets functional, safety and other regulatory standards

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering
    • At least 5+ years of mechanical design experience, preferably with at least 3+ years working in mechanism or drive train design
    • Have gone through the entire product life cycle at least once, from early development all the way through to mass production
    • Experience in high volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding, thermoforming, die casting, sheet metal, etc. and how to design for them
    • Experience working with and managing vendors and contract manufacturers, including participating in on-site CM builds and verification trials
    • Experience working in CAD (preferably Solidworks)
    • Proficiency in GD&T compliant with ANSI Y14.5, with fluency in tolerance stack analysis and datum establishment
    • Familiarity with functional and material safety certification requirements such as UL and IEC is a huge plus
    • A highly motivated team player with excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Enjoy working in a fast paced, collaborative and dynamic start-up environment as part of a small team
    • Willing to occasionally travel
    • A good sense of humor a must
