  • Responsibilities

    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    Prepare and analyze landscaping plans and specifications encompassing a variety of ground development, beautification and rehabilitation programs including master planning; prepare detailed scaled drawings and build models of proposed landscape construction for presentation to client; assist senior staff with design and drafting of landscape projects; as well as report preparation.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

    • Plan and design development of land areas for projects, such as recreational facilities and other commercial, industrial, and residential sites.
    • Prepare separate detailed site plans, grading and drainage plans, lighting plans, paving plans, irrigation plans, planting plans, landscape cost analysis, and construction detail of landscape structures.
    • Compile and analyze data on conditions such as location, drainage, and location of structures for environmental reports and landscaping plans.
    • Prepare detailed scale drawings and tracings from rough sketches or other data provided.
    • Prepare colored drawings and builds models of proposed landscape construction for presentation to client.
    • Raw talent for sketching and drawing; ability to create realistic drawings by hand.
    • Prepare graphic representations or drawings of proposed plans or designs utilizing computer program.
    • Writes and prepares reports.
    • Understand site development capacity and limitations.
    • Translate development programs into detailed land use and site plans.
    • Prepare presentation-quality illustrations.
    • Familiarity with innovative sustainable design strategies and construction methods, both on a planning level and in site design.
    • Ensure project compliance with applicable codes.
    • Ability to undertake frequent site inspections locally, nationally, and internationally to ensure compliance with specifications, approve quality of materials and work, and advise client and construction personnel.
    • Assist senior staff with design and drafting of landscape projects.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Skills/Knowledge:

    • Principles and practices of landscape architecture, topographic mapping, soil mechanics, soil erosion, horticulture, plant ecology and plan, tree and shrubbery arrangements.
    • The propagation, planting and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs, trees and lawns.
    • Basic principles and practices of engineering as applied in grading and filling of land areas and general architectural and building construction.
    • Procedures and practices used in the preparation of engineering and architectural plans, specifications, estimates and reports.
    • Land planning, institutional and campus planning, commercial (private sector) and government (public sector) work.
    • Technically sound, innovative, and sustainable site design and implementation.
    • Working in and promoting a collaborative environment.
    • Prepare landscaping plans and designs for the development of ground area, parks and other recreational areas, and for erosion control purposes.
    • Use creativity and nature to create a harmonious, aesthetically pleasing and functional area, which may include lawns, parks, highways, walkways, and more.
    • Assess a site’s potential to meet the client’s specifications.
    • Communicate well both with clients (nationally and internationally), other departments, and with landscaping team.
    • Ability to reserve car, hotel, and transportation needs (air, train, etc.) with the rationale that business expenses will be reimbursed.
    • Knowledge of local culture preferred.
    • Experience working in diverse settings.
    • Obtain a valid passport within three months of hire.
    • Valid Driver’s License.

    Education/Trainings:

    •    Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture or related degree preferred.

    Experience:

    • Five or more years of experience as a landscape designer, or a combination of relevant education and work experience.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • FTE; Monday through Friday (office hours 7:30 am to 4:30 pm).
    • Evening and weekends as needed.
    • Occasional travel required.

    • Ability to respond quickly to rush projects, multiple deadlines or emergencies.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing and over the telephone.
    • Occasionally requires bending and lifting/transporting of moderately heavy objects; up to 30lbs.
    • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, and to handle other computer components.
    • General vision, hearing, speech, walking and standing required. Turning, twisting, kneeling, and bending performed.
    • Requires alertness to respond to audio and visual cues from the environment, including computers, calculators, telephone systems and other staff members.
