  • Responsibilities

    Coordinates, monitors, promotes and evaluates, in collaboration with the Maternal Medical Director the clinical aspects of the Maternal program to ensure quality obstetric and postpartum patient care is provided through performance improvement, practice and education in collaboration with the Labor and Delivery and Mother-Baby team to include medical and administrative Directors.  Responsible for the coordination of the Maternal and Newborn  Levels of Care Program Performance Improvement (PI) activities.  Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, and champions a service of excellence.  Serves as a liaison and consultant with interdisciplinary teams, to include Case Managers and Social Workers, for optimal care of perinatal patient.  Works collaboratively to ensure patient needs are met and appropriate care delivery is coordinated across the continuum at the proper level of care.  Successfully integrates a collaborative Care Team approach to care, that focuses on the patient, to assure discharge-planning needs are met, achieve desire quality patient outcomes. These duties and responsabilities are mandated by the House Bill 15 Health and Dafety Code, Subchater H and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for Hospital Level of Care Designation for Neonatal and Maternal Care designation and verification.

    Assures compliance with standards, policies and requirements of governmental/regulatory agencies and professional organizations under the supervision of the Labor & Delivery Director and the Mother-Baby Director.

    Required Skills

    1. Knowledgeable of clinical and nursing practice standards.
    2. Effective oral and written communication skills.
    3. Able to demonstrate effective teaching, presentation and marketing skills.
    4. Knowledgeable of prevention program development and implementation.
    5. Knowledgeable of adult and child education theory.
    6. Able to cultivate and maintain positive relationships with community agencies.
    7. Ability to read and comprehend English at a level necessary to follow written and oral instructions and safety precautions.
    8. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
    9. Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

    Required Experience

    Work Experience: Three years of progressive nursing experience in care for patients in Labor and Delivery required.

    B. License/Registration/Certification

    1. Current Texas or compact RN license to practice in the State of Texas.
    2. Current CPR training program required.
    3. Current ACLS and NRP training required.
    4. One of the following national recognized certifications obtained with 2 years of being in the positon required:     - Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB)    - Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)

    C. Education and Training

    1. Bachelor degree in Nursing required.
    2. Meets unit-specific education requirements.
    3. Completion of the On-line Preceptor and UMC's Preceptor Course within 1 year of being in the position.
