**Job Title: **Special Education Teacher, Benhaven School
Reports To: School Director
Salary Range: $58,000-$109,000 per year, exempt, commensurate with years certified and education
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Schedule: Monday-Friday
Purpose of Position:
This is a full-time, 37.5 hour per week, exempt position. The Special Education Teacher works under the direction of the School Director. The Special Education Teacher, collaborating with the team, develops the IEP and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disability and other disabilities.
The following duties are assigned to this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, with the planning and placement team (PPT) each student’s IEP and oversee implementation.
- Conduct assessments as needed.
- Develop curriculum, create learning materials and instructional strategies in the areas of readiness skills, functional academics, community, daily living skills, vocational training and social/behavioral.
- Design data collection systems and oversee recording, analyzing and presenting data to inform program decisions and modifications.
- Participate in and oversee development of students’ positive behavioral support plans
- Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their goals.
- Creates a positive learning experience with an emphasis on individualized instruction using appropriate sources which may include adaptive technology.
- Demonstrate effective leadership skills and the ability to motivate others to grow professionally.
- Ability to teach students who cannot be taught using traditional methods.
- Ability to be punctual and maintain good work attendance.
- Communicate and collaborate regularly with families regarding student progress and needs. Advocate on behalf of students and families.
- Implement teaching strategies, skill building programs and protocols.
- Provide training, technical assistance and supervision in all phases of planning, implementation and assessment of programs.
- Prepare for and attend regular meetings: team, PPT, classroom, medication review, program and teacher meetings.
- Consult with specialists regularly (speech/language, occupational therapist, COTA, adaptive physical education, transition/vocational teacher) to adjust programs in accordance with students’ needs.
- Provide individual leadership, encouragement, support, recognition and positive feedback to classroom staff.
- Train and oversee support staff for all classroom duties.
- Carry out assigned administrative record keeping and reporting responsibilities.
License/Certifications
- Minimum of bachelor’s degree and Connecticut Certification as a Special Educator preferred OR Durational Shortage Area Permit (DSAP) eligible. (*if you are not sure if you meet this requirement, please reach out and we will discuss).
Experience and Skill Requirements:
- Must pass a variety of background checks
- Knowledge of special education curriculum development and I.E.P. goals/objectives (support will be provided)
- Experience working with adolescents in a special education environment
- Three years’ experience working with persons with autism and/or severe disabilities and challenging behaviors including one year of program development
- Strong belief in positive behavioral supports and healthy boundaries
- Knowledge of Special Education teacher requirements in CT
- Must be able to write or modify IEP’S for students with intellectual or physical disabilities.
