** This is a short-term, in-person position that requires the ability to report to our office in El Paso, TX **

Bessel is seeking talented and driven candidates for paid internships in El Paso, Texas. The internship program is designed to be an introduction to the world of medical device development, expose interns to current projects for operating companies allowing them to make an impact on those projects, and to hone interns’ general workplace skills in a structured environment via the Bessel Origin Program.

This is a 6- to 8-week internship program, consisting of a 20-40 hour per week commitment. About 80% of the time will be spent working on real-world engineering and marketing projects with professional teams bringing products to market. The remainder of interns’ time will be spent developing tools and skills transferable to any career by participating in the Bessel Origin workshops.

Expected Work Responsibilities

• Prototype in Matlab or Python and develop in Python.
• Develop a recommendation engine based on user rankings and preferences for a mobile app.
• Develop a custom AI using transfer learning and an off-the-shelf open source large language model.
• Use sensitivity analysis to guide the development of a machine language workflow, for tradeoffs such as between effort on feature engineering versus acquiring training data.

Compensation and Benefits

Interns will be paid hourly rates within the pay range of $15 to $20 per hour for a 6-8 week period depending on experience. Interns will, in addition to adding real work experience to their resumes, participate in the Bessel Origin Program designed to jumpstart careers with coaching from experienced mentors and coaches, cultivating teamwork, and learning from accomplished program staff.

Qualifications

• Computer Science or Data Science or related experience.
• Prior experience implementing machine learning models.
• Completion of Andrew Ng’s Machine Learning in Coursera a plus.
• Current students and recent graduates are welcome to apply; Junior standing or higher preferred.
• Ideal interns have completed relevant coursework.
• Candidates with experience in other engineering fields with an interest in Marketing and Communications are encouraged to apply.
