Betaworks Studios is the new initiative fromBetaworks to launch an international network of physical and digital spaces for builders to connect, collaborate, learn, and create. We are assembling a dedicated team of startup-experienced, product-focused engineers and designers to build the underlying platform and digital experiences that make Studios possible.

This is an audacious project with no shortage of systems and products to build. The team is composed of experienced startup veterans. The right candidates have early-stage experience balancing scalability, speed to market, the leveraging of external services, user experience, and performance, with lessons learned from past trade-offs.

We are building software that connects people around purposeful experimentation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Ideate and iterate with fellow engineers and designers on products like:

• Calendar and registration tools for our in-Studios events
• Membership and application pipelines
• Member directory, connection discovery, and social software
• Conversion and business performance analysis tools
• Real-time utilization metrics and location/presence detection

Work directly with the Head of Engineering to break down projects into achievable increments, shipping high-quality software quickly

Test your work with real-world users (often in the building!); test your work automatically with thoughtful automated testing

Support overarching business goals by connecting product ideas and designs with metrics and emergent requirements

Flex between what you know how to do vs. what you need to learn, making sound architectural decisions and shaping products that will live for years to come

REQUIREMENTS

• 4+ years building software on the web, maintaining production systems, preferably in startup environments
• Demonstrable passion for making new things, startups, and tech culture
• Backend software engineering experience with Javascript, Node.js, and infrastructure with Amazon Web Services and/or Google Cloud Platform
• Database engineering with both relational DBs and nosql/etc. systems
• Frontend software engineering experience with Javascript, React, Redux, ES6+, and responsive CSS
• Experience building for availability, observability, and testability
• Strong opinions that favor quality and maintainability over novelty and overengineering
• Fundamental strength in engineering principles, whether from education or experience, including system design, performance, efficiency, and an ability to analyze and discuss code
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Must be located in or willing to relocate to NYC

Experience is also desired in the following areas:

• Other languages, technologies, and web frameworks not listed above
• Google Firebase
• Container and orchestration frameworks
• Graph databases
• Typescript
• Data warehousing and business intelligence platforms
• The ethical seam(s) between honoring private user information and building useful software
