About Friends of the Children Austin:

Friends of the Children Austin is one of the fastest growing chapters of a 30+ year-old national professional mentoring organization, impacting generational change by empowering youth through relationships with professional mentors. We do this by providing children facing the most obstacles with a long-term, paid, professional mentor, who we call a “Friend,” from kindergarten through high school graduation, 12+ years – no matter what.

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by individuals assigned to this position. They are not intended as a comprehensive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified.

    Position Overview:

The past few years have been challenging for Texas Schools. As a result of these challenges, our children have academically regressed so that currently more than 50% are not on grade level. Our Summer Literacy Book Camp will ensure our most behind elementary schoolers and middle schoolers (grades Pre-K- 8) receive instruction at least one day per week. Each Literacy Tutor will work 1:1 in 60-minute sessions with each child in order to meet individual reading improvement goals. This is where you come in! Mentors will transport children to the Clubhouse, so that Literacy Tutors can concentrate on tutoring. Ideally, Literacy Tutors will share progress updates and focus practice areas each week with Mentors, we call them “Friends”, who will share that information with Caregivers. Literacy team members will set positive expectations, nurture and promote strengths, talents, and abilities; help assure physical and emotional well-being; teach developmentally appropriate literacy skills; and model responsible behavior. A tutor must also know, understand, honor, and support the organization’s mission, vision, values, principles, and policies.

    Core Tutor Accountabilities:

    • 9-week commitment
    • Develop and sustain a caring, trusting and accepting relationship with each child
    • Set realistic expectations and goals based on each child’s strengths and needs
    • Foster collaborative working relationships with each child’s Friend
    • Model and promote good problem solving and decision-making skills
    • Attend and actively participate in lesson planning for each child
    • Notify Friends Austin staff at least 24 hours prior to cancellations
    • Fulfill other responsibilities as required
    • Ability to relate to children and to develop and sustain trusting, supportive relationships with them
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Ability to conduct tutoring sessions in-person
    • Demonstrated ability to work with children in tutoring capacities and settings to help them learn and grow
    • All Friends Austin employees will be required to complete and pass a personal background check prior to being hired.

    Essential Skills and Abilities:

    • ELL / Bilingual required.
    • Ability to assess each youth’s baseline literacy competency, track and monitor the data, and implement an individualized literacy plan.

    Working Hours:

The workday will begin as early as 8:30 am and end as late as 5 pm. We have a spacious office and Clubhouse that can safely accommodate both tutoring sessions and planning. We expect our tutors to make a 40hr a week commitment for 9 weeks.
