    Job Description

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Responsible for the order entry of prescriptions, preparation and fulfillment of prescription orders, disposable supplies and related activities under the direction and supervision of a Pharmacist.

    SCOPE OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Role and responsibilities are to provide technical pharmacy support, clerical duties, and customer service operations, under the direct supervision of a clinical pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians/trainees may perform the duties listed in job description provided the technicians/trainees have been properly trained, a pharmacist verifies the accuracy of any duty performed, and the technicians/trainees are under the direct supervision of a pharmacist

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Prepare pharmaceutical and chemotherapeutic agents under pharmacist's supervision, demonstrating a commitment to excellence.
    • Perform accurate prescription intake order entry processes that are held for pharmacist’s review and authorization.
    • Initiate or receive communications with a practitioner or his or her agent, on behalf of a patient, regarding refill authorization requests under the supervision of a pharmacist.
    • Initiate and complete delivery/shipment forms.
    • Attend and participate in all staff meetings, patient care meetings, In-service education or ongoing education training with demonstration of competency specific to pharmacy technician role and conferences that may apply to position.
    • Prepare, record and monitor results for pharmaceutical quality assurance testing.
    • Assist in maintaining the pharmacy facility in adherence to Policy and Procedures for achievement of excellent audit results.
    • Responsible for knowing and adhering to Policy and Procedures governing pharmacy operations and pharmacy technician responsibilities.
    • Responsible for knowing and adhering to State Pharmacy regulations governing pharmacy technicians.
    • Assist Pharmacist(s) in inventory procedures including record keeping and ordering.
    • Log and shelve incoming inventory.
    • Organize assigned workload to best facilitate its accomplishment
    • Involvement in Continuous Quality Improvement Program
    • Pharmacy technician is not permitted to dispense, transfer prescriptions, accept telephone orders, or consult concerning contents, therapeutic values, and uses of any medicinal drug; Technicians may not advise regarding interactions of patent or proprietary preparations, whether pursuant to prescriptions or in the absence and entirely independent of such prescriptions or orders. Technicians may not make an alteration to a prescriber’s directions, the diagnosis or treatment of any disease, the initiation of any drug therapy, or any activity relating to the practice of medicine

    ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist the Pharmacists, when requested, in all duties and functions according to standard practices of the profession and state, federal and other applicable laws.
    • Perform other tasks as requested by Pharmacists on duty and supervisor.
    • Must be able to rotate through all pharmacy technician work areas of the Pharmacy.

    QUALIFICATIONS & ABILITIES:

    • High school graduate or equivalent.
    • Minimum of one year experience in retail pharmacy or specialty pharmacy.
    • Must have passed a certification examination offered by a nationally recognized program. Must be registered in the State of practice.
    • Knowledge of basic drug terminology, pharmaceutical evaluation, pharmacology and pharmaceutical law.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills. Must have basic understanding of computer technology.
    • Pharmaceutical quality assurance experience.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING AND/OR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Certification examination offered by a nationally recognized program. Must be registered in the State of Florida or applicable state.

    EXPECTED PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Personal Computers
    • Word Processing
    • Algebra and basic math

    LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician
    •  Board registration as Pharmacy Technician

    CONTINUING EDUCATION:

    • Stays abreast of developments in field of Specialty Pharmacy.
    • Attends continuing education/workshops recommended by the State-Board of Pharmacy and accrediting agency.
