Framatome is a major international player in the nuclear energy market recognized for its innovative solutions and value-added technologies for designing, building, maintaining, and advancing the global nuclear fleet. The company designs, manufactures, and installs components and fuel for nuclear power plants and offers a full range of reactor services.

With 14,000 employees worldwide, every day Framatome’s expertise helps its customers improve the safety and performance of their nuclear plants and achieve their economic and societal goals.

The BWR Core Design (Engineering) Department in Richland consists of both the BWR Neutronics domain and the BWR Thermal-Hydraulics domain. The BWR Codes and Methods group is responsible for the maintenance and evolution of codes and methods supporting both domains.

The BWR Thermal Hydraulics domain is responsible for supporting the licensing and operation of Framatome fuels in commercial reactors. Included in the scope is the development of steady-state, transient and accident methodologies, and computer codes and application methods associated with licensing BWR fuel. The department also supports the design and development of advanced fuel designs and supports developing solutions for emerging industry issues. To achieve this charter, the department is composed of multiple customer focused reload teams as well as a codes and methods team.

The Richland Thermal Hydraulics group commonly interacts with peer departments in other regions of the world (Virginia, France and Germany).

Framatome is seeking an experienced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) engineer at our Richland WA facility. This qualified individual will utilize the STAR-CCM+ CFD software package to assess and design complex thermal-hydraulic features in light water reactors while in a supporting role for a CFD technical lead. Tasks will be in support of AREVA NP fuel for boiling water reactors (BWRs). Tasks may expand to include other aspects of both BWRs and pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The ideal candidate will have strong background in CFD methodology and applications and will enjoy the challenge of developing new technics to solve industrial complicated thermal-hydraulic problems.

    Responsibilities and duties include:

    • Thermal-hydraulic analyses utilizing STAR-CCM+ software, including documentation of the analyses that meets AREVA NP quality assurance requirements.
      • CFD methodology qualification, and documentation
      • CFD analysis conceptualization and proposal preparation.
    • Working with a team of engineers on common thermal-hydraulic problems (both locally and globally)
    • Participation and support in thermal-hydraulic tests.
      • Provide guidance for thermal hydraulic testing to be used for CFD validation.
      • Use CFD analyses to help guide testing configurations.
    • Regulatory and customer interactions on projects.
    • Technical consulting for thermal-hydraulic phenomena (both locally and globally).
    • Mentoring of less experienced engineers.
    • Understanding single-phase and two-phase flows, boiling heat transfer simulation for both low and high quality flows.
    • Understanding of turbulence modeling (RANS, both steady state and unsteady).

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Strong background in CFD theory and different modeling techniques (RANS, LES, Euler-euler, and Lagrangian techniques)
    • High proficiency in utilizing STAR CCM+ CFD software, including massively parallel architecture
    • Ability to manage and help maintain a dedicated HPC CFD platform with Linux,
    • Skilled with computer languages: C, Java, FORTRAN, scripting
    • Experience with single-phase and two-phase simulations
    • Experience using thermal-hydraulic testing for CFD validation purposes.
    • Past experience related to Boiling Water Reactors is preferable
    • Proficiency in FORTAN, C, PYTHON, and UNIX is preferable
    • Related experience in the development and application of reactor core and system analysis codes (such as
    • RELAP, TRAC, TRACE, RETRAN) is preferable.

All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for this opportunity. Candidates who exceed minimum qualifications may be considered for a higher level position.

    • ENGINEER II:  BS in Engineering plus 2-3 years of relevant engineering experience.
    • ENGINEER III:  BS in Engineering plus 3-5 years of relevant engineering experience.
    • ENGINEER IV:  BS in Engineering plus 5-7 years of relevant engineering experience
    • An advanced degree may be substituted for related experience (MS 1-2 yrs. or PhD 1-3 yrs.).
    • BS, MS, or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or other scientific degree with applicable industry experience.

The following requirements are desired and will be used to differentiate all candidates who apply for this position.
