    POSITION SUMMARY

    The College Navigator is a position funded by the BRF with the goal that 100% of Biotechnology Magnet Academy (BTA) seniors apply to at least one higher education institution and receive scholarships and financial aid according to their eligibility. The College Navigator will advise college preparation for program participants. This individual will collaborate with different constituency groups including parents, students, administrative, faculty and program coordinators. The Navigator will assist with ACT preparation and ACT test signup, track student academic progress, work with BioStart interns, and consult with students and parents on college selection and college admissionsissues. The College Navigator will also assist the BRF in reporting to contributors to the program by collecting information about the students and the program.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Responsibilities include but not limited to:

    Provide advice to students and parents to address scheduling, academic progress, college readiness and placement options either face to face, through video conferencing, or by addressing classes.

    Assist students with completing and submitting college and scholarship applications including the Federal Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA).

    Inform students of internship opportunities and programs including the Area Health Education Center (AHEC).

    Maintain student information/demographics electronically and provide monthly reports to BRF staff.

    Assist students in registering for the ACT; encourage students to participate in test preparation classes and/or retake tests as needed.

    Offer students the opportunity to visit colleges and universities as the budget allows.

    Assist with planning Biotechnology Academy events as needed.

    Assist with recruiting, student selection, and ensuring of ongoing program success for BioStart Internship participants.

    Assist BioStart interns with registration for regional and state science fairs.

    Along with the BTA Director, create the bi-weekly agenda for BTA leadership meetings.

    Create quarterly newsletters (Aug/Sept, Nov. 1, Feb. 1, and early May) with input and assistance from students and BTA coordinators.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is required. Preferred qualifications include knowledge in college preparation, a flexible schedule, familiarity with common computer software and electronic communications tools, excellent communication skills, and a desire to work with high school students. The College Navigator agrees to work for ten months from August 1 to May 31 for $1,150 per month, for a total of $11,500 based upon completion of the school year. The Navigator will work with the Biotech Magnet Academy students for approximately 15 hours per week, understanding that some weeks will be busier than others.
