    Black & McDonald's Syracuse team is growing! The Electrical Power Engineer is located in Syracuse, NY and typically reports directly to the Manager, Electrical Engineering & Design.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Planning, drawing layout, and equipment specification of medium voltage systems 5kV thru 35kV and substations thru 230kV from initial proposal phase thru final construction and commissioning phases. 
    • Capable of interfacing with clients, contractors, estimators, field technicians, equipment suppliers, and utility company representatives. 
    • Coordination with other project civil, structural, mechanical, and site design engineers.
    • Detailed review of vendor equipment drawing submittals.
    • Protective relay setting analysis and creating setting programs for microprocessor based relays.
    • Provide occasional technical support for the electrical testing division.
    • Occasional travel to meet with clients, inspect projects, and gather data to analyze systems or evaluate equipment.
    • Use ETAP power analysis software to perform fault analysis, protective device coordination, arc flash, and ground grid analysis studies.

    EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

    • Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering, B.S.E.E degree preferred.
    • Familiar with the National Electrical Code and the National Electric Safety Code requirements.
    • Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI and NETA electrical power industry standards.
    • Licensed Professional Engineer in New York State or plans to pursue licensing.

    WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    • Minimum 8 years of experience in electrical construction design and analysis of substation and power distribution systems.
    • Experienced in planning, layout, and equipment specification of medium voltage systems 5kV thru 35kV and substations thru 230kV from initial proposal phase thru final construction and commissioning phases.  Capable of interfacing with clients, contractors, estimators, field technicians, equipment suppliers, and utility company representatives.  Coordination with other project civil, structural, mechanical, and site design engineers.
    • Experience in protective relay setting analysis and creating setting programs for microprocessor based relays preferred.
    • Experience in using ETAP or SKM power analysis software to perform fault analysis, protective device coordination, arc flash, and ground grid analysis studies PREFERRED.

    SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    • Familiar with the National Electrical Code and the National Electric Safety Code requirements.
    • Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI and NETA electrical power industry standards.
    • Licensed Professional Engineer in New York State or plans to pursue licensing.
    • AutoCAD experience helpful.
    • Microsoft Project software experience helpful.
    • Occasional travel
