    UNAVCO, a non-profit membership-governed consortium, facilitates geoscience research and education using geodesy.

    UNAVCO intends to run all internship programs during summer 2021. At this time, we aim to conduct these programs in person, in Boulder, Colorado. Should the situation change in terms of health and safety of participants and program staff we will convert all programming to a remote model. We will make any such decision on or before March 1, 2021.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    • The Communications Intern will assist with website content, social media, and science writing.

    • A weekly stipend of $680-$760 is provided (rate depends on skills and experience) for 8 weeks

    • WORK CAN BE COMPLETED IN BOULDER, COLORADO OR AT A REMOTE LOCATION

    • Eligible individuals must be enrolled as a student at the time of application.

    • Internship is 11-weeks during summer 2021. Exact dates TBD; we expect either May 17-July 30 or May 24-August6.

    • Interns must participate for the full 11-week period.

     

     

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Intern will be responsible for assisting with content migration from existing HTML-based web pages to a new, WordPress-based site. Additional tasks may include contributing to organizational news stories and science summaries, creating and posting content on social media, and working collaboratively with staff throughout UNAVCO to promote activities of the GAGE facility. The successful applicant will have basic technical skills working in an online environment, will be highly organized, and have exceptional attention to detail. The position may include original writing of news articles and social media content pending the experience and domain expertise of the applicant. 

     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Migrate existing content from HTML-based websites to WordPress.
    • Draft and post new content using WordPress.
    • Develop compelling and engaging social media posts that drive traffic to websites.
    • Assist with graphics and images for communications purposes

     

    WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

    Internal

    • Reports to the Communications Associate, interacts and collaborates with peers and colleagues across the organization.

    External

    • May interact with community members primarily around science discoveries

     

    SUPERVISION

    Interacts effectively with various UNAVCO staff to ensure the completion of assigned responsibilities. May provide guidance on technical matters to others. Does not have supervisory responsibility.

    Required Experience

    REQUIRED EDUCATION

    • University level student in earth sciences or related STEM field
    • Interest in working at the intersection of science and communication

    • Ability to manage time, especially when there may be competing priorities

     

    PREFERRED SKILLS

    • Basic knowledge of HTML
    • Experience working in WordPress or other content management system
    • Experience with multiple social media platforms
    • Experience making figures in a graphics software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop)
    • Ability to translate complex scientific concepts to non-scientific audiences
