    Job Description

    Title: Marketing and Communications Manager

    Status: Full Time Exempt, Salary plus Benefits

    Reports to: General Manager

    Supervises: Marketing and Membership Staff; Board Administrator; External Vendors

    Summary: As a part of the Bloomingfoods senior leadership team, the Marketing and Communications Manager plays a key role in the success of the co-op. It is the responsibility of this person to project the co-op’s value out to the community, while at the same time pulling the community into the co-op’s sphere; to establish Bloomingfoods as the place where connecting local healthy food to each shopper, and to each person in Bloomington, matters.

    This role is responsible for a variety of strategic marketing and communications plans that integrate digital channels with traditional media and in-store promotions. The ideal candidate:

    Is a generalist who has had some hands-on experience with all marketing and public relations channels.

    Is comfortable developing strategic plans, then guiding staff and third-party vendors through implementation.

    Knows how to interpret sales data and research to increase sales, amplify awareness and foster engagement with all stakeholders (customers, owner-members, staff and the community).

    Understands how to work cross-functionally with Operations, Finance, and Store Management to create a dynamic customer experience that drives the organization forward as a whole.

    Key Responsibilities

    Owner-Member Communications and Services:

    In all ways, Bloomingfoods’ success is tied directly to the value it holds for its Owner-Members.

    Be an Owner-Member subject-matter expert.

    Guide day to day activities help the organization increase, retain, engage and communicate with Owner-Members.

    Marketing:

    Develop and manage a comprehensive strategic marketing communications plan.

    Shape the Bloomingfoods brand and ensure message consistency.

    Build segmented campaigns across traditional and digital channels that: motivate current customers to shop more often and increase basket size; identify potential new shoppers; are tracked, targeted and data-driven.

    Develop strategic research and analytics plans that capture consumer and market insights to inform marketing strategies; and that measure effectiveness of current marketing initiatives.

    PR and Media Relations:

    Develop and manage a comprehensive strategic public and media relations plan.

    Ensure positive representation of the co-op to the media, the public, and external stakeholders;

    Describe the co-op’s role as advocate for real and local food, and for cooperative ideals in general.

    Pitch and produce PR content for all channels, and maintain good relations with the media.

    Community Relations:

    Seek out and build mutually beneficial partnerships with community groups interested in advocating for public policies favorable to sustainable agriculture, food safety and equity, and other cooperative goals.

    Represent the co-op at public events and find ways to promote the co-op’s values in the community.

    Planning & Finance:

    Create and manage marketing and communications budgets.

    Measure, analyze, report on the performance of marketing and communications campaigns against financial goals.

    Actively monitor food advocacy, co-op, grocery industry, and consumer trends.

    Intra-Organizational Collaboration:

    Work collaboratively with a management team and the board of directors.

    Coordinate marketing and merchandising promotions with Operations and Category Managers.

    Work with store managers to cultivate front-line staff as Bloomingfoods ambassadors, and as key to the success of marketing and communications efforts.

    Qualifications

    Passion for the mission and vision of the co-op.

    Communications and marketing generalist, with experience devising and leading multiple cross-channel marketing campaigns with minimal supervision.

    Collaborative mindset.

    Numerically literate and data driven; can: create and administer budgets; analyze POS data and identify target audiences; create, read and analyze marketing and organizational metrics.

    Familiarity with natural foods market.

    Minimum Bachelor's degree in related field (Business Administration, Marketing preferred).

    At least 5 years relevant experience, preferably in retail or CPG industries.

    Demonstrated grass roots advocacy or legislation background with regard to food equity, local economies, urban sustainability, or cooperative organizations not required but considered a plus.
