    ASSISTANT DIRECTOR CAREER SERVICES

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

     

    Reporting to the Director of University Career Services – SI Campus, the Assistant Director is a highly visible position on both the Staten Island and Queens campuses of St. John’s University. This relationship-focused role has an emphasis on ensuring student internship and job readiness, while also expanding career opportunities. The Assistant Director serves as a liaison between industry, faculty and students and Career Services. They understand industry workforce needs and assist students to prepare for employment through career readiness development, facilitated learning sessions and other student support. The Assistant Director will provide comprehensive individual and group advisement sessions to target population(s). The performance standard for this position is a measurable increase in utilization of career services, participation in the internship and career readiness of St. John’s University students, equitable career outcomes for all students, and overall contributions to the effectiveness of the Career Services department and the Division of Student Affairs.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    · Support the success of St. John’s students for Staten Island and Queens campuses through career readiness development and connections to industry, striving for equitable access to resources and equitable outcomes.

    · Develop innovative, scalable ways to deliver programming and provide career-related development and services to Staten Island and Queens students and recent alumni.

    · Work closely with college faculty, departments, student groups, and alumni to develop and lead both foundational training (resume preparation, internships, interview skills, mock interviews, soft skills, and job search strategies) and career-related programs customized for students within the school and various programs.

    · Provide comprehensive individual and group advisement sessions to target population(s) for students and alumni.

    · Acquire and maintain an intimate knowledge of College and University programs and pedagogy.

    · Actively contribute to the on-campus recruitment process through student preparation.

    · Utilize technology to meet student and employer needs in recruitment and placement.

    · Support the assessment of student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.

    · Collaborate and contribute to career planning and job search resources (i.e. career fairs, workshops, conferences, etc.) to enhance the students’ career preparedness.

    · Be informed of national, state and local hiring practices, guidelines, and labor related issues.

    · Assist students in developing career decision making skills, utilizing career assessment tools when appropriate.

    · Collaborate with colleagues in the department and across the University, as needed, to support the University’s evolving needs and strategic priorities.

     

    OTHER AREAS:

     

    · Hire, train and develop, supervise, and evaluate office Graduate Assistants and/or Career Peers.

    · In conjunction with Director, oversee Leadership Development Programming for the Staten Island campus, including but not limited to, advising and coordinating activities for Omicron Delta Kappa and/or the National Society of Leadership and Success.

    · In conjunction with the Director, support strategic employer communications; and host and/or visit businesses, government and other organizations to develop opportunities.

    · Maintain up-to-date knowledge of recruiting and market trends in various industries.

    · Represent University Career Services and St. John’s University to constituents at events such as Open House, Accepted Students Day, and other university and community events.

    · Other responsibilities as assigned.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    · Bachelor’s Degree required.

    · Minimum of five years of experience in career services, human resources, career coaching, corporate recruiting/business development, or related field. Proven success in developing and maintaining internal and external relationships.

    · Excellent resume, interviewing and job search skills required.

    · Must be collaborative, self-directed, outcome oriented, and able and willing to work under pressure with frequent interruptions. Must have strong customer service focus for internal and external constituents and been successful in working both independently and in cross-functional teams.

    · Demonstrate cutting-edge approach to empowering students to navigate the path from college to career successfully.

    · Must have familiarity of employment and industry trends.

    · Proficient in the use of web based software. Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel required.

    · Strong oral and written communication skills, experience teaching, training or facilitating workshops. Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations to groups.

    · Must be ready and able to work in person at both the Queens and Staten Island locations, as well as virtual as needed.

    · Some local travel required.

    · Evening and weekend work required.

     

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

     

    · Master’s degree

    · Familiarity with career services in higher education

    · Proficiency in use of social media as a recruitment/placement tools
