    Division/Department Information

    The Counselor Education department within the School of Education at St. John’s University is seeking applicants for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor faculty member beginning in fall of

    2024. The School of Education offers doctoral degree (i.e., Ed.D. and Ph.D.) programs and 43 master’s degree programs that accommodate career changers, field changers, and those who seek expertise and/or certification in the areas of Adolescent Education, Childhood Education, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Early Childhood Education, Literacy, School Building Leadership, School Counseling, Special Education, and TESOL. Our programs are designed to be flexible, with online and traditional schedules.

    The Counselor Education department currently offers two M.S.Ed. programs, in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) and School Counseling (SCH). The department also offers two advanced certificates in SCH and CMHC. Courses are offered on our Queens campus and online during evening hours to accommodate working professionals. All master’s programs are accredited by the Council on the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), and approved for the graduate student option by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). The MSEd in SCH meets New York state education requirements for initial certification as a School Counselor. The MSEd in CMHC meets New York state education requirements for the limited permit in License in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC), as well as the Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Use Counselor in Training (CASAC-T).     Responsibilities

    The department is seeking faculty candidates who can support the growth of new and existing graduate programs within the Counselor Education department. We are seeking candidates with the ability to teach in both the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs. The faculty member will have a strong Counselor identity, be familiar with CACREP standards, and have a commitment to maintaining both our Counselor identity and CACREP accreditation. Faculty should have active engagement with the profession, at either the local, state, or national level. The faculty member should have a demonstrated understanding of expanding and emerging trends in counseling, including multiculturalism and social justice, telemental health, crisis/trauma, neuroscience, and addictions, as well as advocacy for the profession, clients, and students.

    Faculty member responsibilities include teaching, research/scholarship, and service. Tenure-track faculty will teach a three-three course load, with the option of teaching summer for additional compensation. The faculty member will teach on both the Queens campus and online and will be required to complete training in online instruction. They will be required to keep office hours and attend meetings/events on campus. This is not a remote position. The faculty member will provide individualized academic advising to students. The faculty member will engage in scholarly research and publication in the field of professional Counseling. The faculty member will participate in departmental, school, and university-wide committee work, and will serve as the advisor or liaison to department specific initiatives as appropriate (e.g, CSI, NBCC, NYS, CACREP, etc.). The faculty member will utilize technology to its fullest extent to support our students, programs, and administration.

    Qualifications

    Required Education:

    · Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in Counselor Education, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program; candidates with ABD status and scheduled degree completion by December 2024 will be considered.

    · Candidates must have a master’s degree in a counseling specialization, such as School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling, or other CACREP specialization. Masters degrees beyond Counseling cannot be considered.

    Required Counseling Experience:

    · Candidates should have a minimum of three to five years of post-masters professional counseling experience, with a preference for candidates that are fully licensed and/or certified in their Counseling field of expertise.

    Required Skills and Characteristics:

    · Communication: Public speaking and teaching/training. Strong oral and written communication skills.

    · Research: Capacity to builid and maintain a scholarly research agenda, including peer reviewed publications, presentations, and external funding

    · Technology: Including administrative functions (e.g. email, Microsoft office products, videoconferencing software) and teaching functions (e.g. learning management systems, interactive teaching technologies), and emerging technology

    · Personal characteristics: Ethical, inclusive, collaborative, team-player, student-advocate

    Preferred Qualifications: The following qualifications are preferred:

    · Doctoral and Master’s degree from CACREP accredited programs

    · Teaching experience at the graduate level

    · Licensure and/or certification in School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling

    · Experience supervising master’s level counselors or interns

    · Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential

    · Prior peer reviewed publications, conference presentations, or securing grant funding

    · Familiarity with CACREP accreditation

    · Experience with external partnerships

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $73,600 - $76,000. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
