    POSITION SUMMARY: The Translation and Interpretation Unit of the Department of Education (DOE) is hiring a Special Education Senior Translation Project Manager to lead a team of project coordinators and oversee the translation of a variety of special education-related documents, including the Individualized Education Program (IEP) into foreign languages for dissemination to Limited-English-Proficient (LEP) parents and communities. Performs related work.

     

    REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Special Education Translations, Translation and Interpretation Unit

     

    DIRECT REPORTS: Special Education Translation Project Coordinators

     

    KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Act as the main liaison between DOE offices/schools, in-house translation personnel, and external language vendors.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    • Act as the principal point of contact between the special education translation personnel of the Unit, client DOE schools and offices, parents, and external vendors.
    • Review, prepare, and assign written translation requests to team of project managers.
    • Manage and oversee the work of team of project managers and/or translators to ensure timely delivery of projects.
    • Serve as lead project manager on critical and/or large translation projects, including identifying, managing, and scheduling translation resources, coordinating typesetting, and conducting internal review of completed translations.
    • Coordinate training sessions for project management team.
    • Track project-related budgets with vendors.
    • Maintain cooperative working relationships with language service providers.
    • Research policy, resources, and methods for increasing efficiency of systems and workflows within the Unit.
    • Develop and maintain productive workflows for DOE client offices and schools.
    • Produce high-level reporting for the translation services provided across the DOE.
    • Troubleshoot data request and delivery discrepancies.
    • Manage additional assignments as they relate to the provision of DOE’s language services to LEP parents of special education children.
    • Represent the Unit at meetings/presentations with constituent groups.

     

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

     

    MINIMUM

     

    1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
    2. High school graduation or equivalent and eight years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
    3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

     

    PREFERRED

     

    • Familiarity with the New York City public school system.
    • Ability to function and meet aggressive deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Strong logistical and long-term planning experience.
    • Ability to effectively address and resolve complaints and provide quality customer service..
    • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
    • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
    • Experience in project management or translation centered activities.
    • Strong Microsoft Office skills; specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
    • Knowledge of translation memory software and translation project management tools.

     

    SALARY: $62,055+

    (Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not make less than their current salary.)
