POSITION: Ophthalmic Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Ophthalmology
STATUS: Full-time, 80 hrs per pay period
SHIFT: M-F Days, Schedule varies with the needs of the department
POSITION SUMMARY: Assists Ophthalmologist by obtaining medical histories, performing preliminary eye function testing and explaining to patients about medication or procedures, preparing the patient for the exam and beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements. Performs instrument maintenance and automated tests.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Coordinates scheduling of patients
Gather patients ocular and medical history; documents appropriately
Performs a variety of routine tasks within the scope of practice using ophthalmic instruments that provide diagnostic information including but not limited to; intraocular pressure, basic motility, visual fields, PAM and BAT tests, A-Scan ultrasonography and fundus photography
Administers topical medications or diagnostic drugs as directed by physician
Prepare and position patient for diagnostic exams
Maintain a smooth flow of patients from waiting room, to the examination room, to the physician and making them comfortable during the wait.
Record patient charges
Assist physician with patient education
Provide clerical assistance to front desk when needed
Prepares and stocks rooms daily
Performs all tasks within the scope of their position, referring to the Physician for guidance and orders
Organizes inventory and orders medical supplies
Provides patient education in office visits or by telephone
Follows basic infection control principles
Cleans rooms and patient care equipment
Demonstrates the ability to communicate and receive constructive feedback in a positive manner
Maintains strict confidentiality regarding knowledge of all patient information (HIPAA), staff, clinic and hospital confidential business
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Skills: Performs customary assistance in the Ophthalmic Assistant scope of practice; Ability to read, write legibly and comprehend the written and spoken word in English; Basic computer literacy and ability to effectively learn new software programs required
Education: High School Diploma; Successful completion of a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant course
Experience: Minimum one (1) year experience in an ophthalmology setting
Licenses needed: Current BLS (AHA) certification; Current JCAHPO Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate required
