    POSITION: Ophthalmic Technician

    DEPARTMENT: Ophthalmology

    STATUS: Full-time, 80 hrs per pay period

    SHIFT: M-F Days, Schedule varies with the needs of the department

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Provides clinic office patient care, assures safe, competent care for clinic patients. Assist the Ophthalmologist with diagnostic and treatment-oriented procedures and administrative tasks.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Escorts patients to examination rooms, records patient history and assists with documentation.

    Coordinate scheduling of patient appointments and surgeries

    Perform a variety of routine tests using ophthalmic instruments

    Assist the physician during diagnostic and minor surgical procedures including instrumentation, sterile preparations and documentation

    Administer topical medications or diagnostic drugs as required by the provider for testing or treatment

    Prepare and position patient for diagnostic tests and procedures

    Must demonstrate ability to tactfully handle difficult situations with patients, families and physicians; excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills

    Provides clinical care at the direction of a licensed physician and within the scope of practice

    Prepares and stocks rooms daily

    Performs all tasks within the scope of their position, referring to the Physician for guidance and orders

    Organizes inventory and orders medical supplies

    Provides patient education in office visits or by telephone

    Follows basic infection control principles

    Cleans rooms and patient care equipment

    Coordinates daily tasks, working independently with consideration to time management and task completion

    Provides services according to Bonner General Health Plan of Care

    Demonstrates safe and efficient use of all clinical and clerical equipment

    Accepts new tasks on own initiative

    Maintains a safe environment for patients; uses safety precautions appropriately

    Demonstrates understanding and utilization of Standard Precautions, asepsis and infection control procedures

    Demonstrates ability to respond quickly and effectively in an emergency situation

    Demonstrates the ability to communicate and receive constructive feedback in a positive manner

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

    Skills:

    Performs customary assistance in the Ophthalmic Technician scope of practice

    Ability to read, write legibly and comprehend the written and spoken word in English

    Basic computer literacy and ability to effectively learn new software programs required

    Education:

    High School Diploma

    Successful completion of a Certified Ophthalmic Technician course

    Experience: Minimum one (1) year experience in an ophthalmology setting

    Licenses needed:

    Current BLS (AHA) certification

    Current JCAHPO Ophthalmic Technician Certificate required
