    Job Description

    The Tool and Die Apprenticeship Program will combine on the job training with job related instruction to result in a Computer Integrated Machining Diploma. The Apprenticeship Program will generally run for a period of 2 years. Previous experience and formal training will be appropriately credited. During the Apprenticeship Program employees will receive on the job and classroom training. Each apprentice shall be subject to a periodic examination and on the job performance appraisal.

    In accordance with the Apprentice Program, apprentices will be required to attend and complete required recognized training courses within a designated 2-year period as defined in the Apprentice Program curriculum from Gaston College. This will involve attendance at the local education establishments, On-the-Job-Training (OJT) and satisfactory scores for all requirements within the program.

    JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, or grinders.

    Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.

    Shim sharpen, inspect and maintain production tooling.

    Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.

    Troubleshoot dies in the press and on the bench.

    Modify parts and materials to improve overall production

    Test completed equipment to detect and remove defects

    Verify conformance of finished product to specifications.

    May be required to set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data for capability studies.

    Works with designers, production personnel, programmers and others to resolve machining problems.

    Participate in TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) activities within the area.

    Must be attentive and aware of machine anomalies as they occur.

    Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.

    Read blueprints, schematics and manuals.

    Good at math with analytical abilities

    Physical stamina and strength to lift heavy items

    Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping

    Perform work in other maintenance classifications when assigned

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    High School Diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited school(GPA 3.0 preferred).

    Strong mathematical skills.

    Superior problem solving and analytical skills.

    Strong interpersonal communication and listening skills.

    Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision, drive toward accomplishment, and produce high quality work. 

    Good attention to detail. 

    Acceptable scores of Accuplacer/WorkKeys/SAT/ACT for admittance to Gaston College. 

    Able to do repetitive hand, arm and leg movements for several hours.

    Able to climb on and off fork truck.

    Ability to stand for 10-12 hours straight.  

    Able to climb and descend stairs for up to 12 hours continuously.

    Lift, push and pull up to 40 pounds.

    Able to squat, bend at the waist and knees freely.

    Able to handle exposures to temperature extremes. 

    Able to handle exposure to sounds or noise levels that may be uncomfortable.

    Bending and twisting handle, control or feel objects / tools.

    Wear required personal protective equipment (safety glasses, bump cap/hard hat, gloves, steel toed shoes, ear protection, arc flash gear and respirator when required).
