Are you looking to make a difference in the world? Boston Meats is revolutionizing the food industry by solving a major global challenge: how to make meat production ethical and sustainable. To make something better than the existing plant-based burgers, we are developing alternative meat whole-cuts using innovations in materials science, synthetic biology, and tissue engineering. This will transform how the world consumes meat and protein. Spun out of Harvard University and the Wyss Institute in 2020, Boston Meats is actively expanding our core technical team. We are seeking a Cell Engineer to join our team immediately to help develop a new class of alternative meat products. You should have an expert understanding of cell culture techniques, the ability to culture a variety of cell types, including stem cells, and a thorough understanding of defined media formulations used for stem cell lineage specification. At Boston Meats, you will focus your talents to the challenge of enhancing cell-based meat products. In this critical role, you will lead independent research on the development of our cell-based meat products and help showcase the superiority of our approach.

    ABOUT YOU:

    • You are fascinated by what cells can do! You enjoy culturing cells and bringing them to life for a variety of applications. You understand how the cell is both a ‘builder’ and a ‘building block’.

    • You have a PhD or equivalent industry experience (4+ years) in Cell Biology, Bioengineering, Tissue Engineering, or relating fields

    • You have cultured iPSCs, ESCs and primary cells and have differentiated them towards functionally mature phenotypes. Knowledge of skeletal muscle and/or adipose differentiation is recommended but not required.

    • You have experience with serum-free media formulations for stem cell maintenance and differentiation.

    • You have experience using bioreactors to culture stem cells.

    • You are familiar with analytical techniques that include histology and immunohistochemical staining, RNA sequencing, genomics, and proteomics.

    • You want to grow with the company, support new hires, and, over time, manage a team of passionate individuals like yourself.

    • What you do for work matters deeply to you and you believe your expertise can be leveraged to create a better food system.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • You’ll independently manage and lead critical areas of research as well as help with hiring and supervising junior scientists.

    • You’ll develop new ways of growing and recapitulating muscle and fat tissues.

    • You’ll design and execute research studies to analyze cell-based meat structure and composition

    • You’ll lead independent cell culture studies that involve stem cell proliferation and differentiation experiments, media formulation developments, scaffold and bioreactor design.

    • You’ll contribute to cell culture process development and scaling strategies.

    • You’ll help navigate the emerging regulatory framework for cell-based meat products.

    • You’ll contribute operationally to Boston Meats by working with the founders to help grow our business.

At Boston Meats, we are deeply committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion. Our goal is to create an environment and company culture where people from all walks of life can come together in an inclusive manner and be an amazing force for good!
