Boston University has received a gift to create a new endowed Professorship supporting the University’s deepening interest and commitments to urban health issues globally. We are seeking a creative and innovative scholar to help define and lead university-wide efforts in urban health, one who will stimulate thinking on global issues of urban health and who will inspire collaborations across the University. The Beverly A. Brown Professor of Urban Health will take the lead in growing the urban health program through coordinating and synthesizing the current urban health research, teaching, and service activities from around the University.

The inaugural holder of the Beverly Brown Professorship for Improvement in Urban Health will be an outstanding individual with a proven record of innovative and important scholarship on urban health issues in the US and/or internationally.  The holder will provide leadership in both research and teaching on urban health issues.  The scholar will be encouraged to work with various Schools and Centers at Boston University that are engaged with the urban health agenda – faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Management, School of Social Work, School of Public Health, Metropolitan College, the newly formed Pardee School for Global Studies, the Slone Epidemiology Center, the Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, and the African Studies Center. By catalyzing and fostering cross-disciplinary and cross-university research, the scholar will add value to the urban-related research and teaching already underway at Boston University and stimulate an expanding interest in urban issues both domestically and internationally. This professorship is awarded by the Provost, rather than by any individual College or School.  The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be in the academic unit appropriate to their disciplinary training with the possibility of a secondary appointment in another relevant unit.  The inaugural holder of this professorship will be expected to work closely with faculty in the School of Public Health and with researchers at the university-wide Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD).

    Required Skills

The successful candidate will have an outstanding scholarly record, a commitment to cross-disciplinary research and an earned doctorate in a relevant discipline (city and regional planning, demography, economics, epidemiology, social work, sociology, public health, etc.). She/he will exhibit a track record of successful efforts in generating grant funding to help BU create an expanding project, program, and human resource base for additional urban health activities.

Strong preference will be given to candidates with a global reputation as leaders in the study of the complex challenges for improving health in urban environments.  The appointment of this Professor will mark a pivotal moment in Boston University’s ongoing development as a global research leader and laboratory for field-defining, multidisciplinary solutions to some of society’s most pressing needs.

Boston University, focused on its mission to serve society as a “Great, Urban, Research-driven University,” is in a period of remarkable growth and development.  The creation of the Beverly Brown Professorship in Improving Urban Health occurs amidst a period of increasing recognition of the intellectual strengths of the faculty of Boston University. The University is launching as Initiative on Cities that will be co-led by former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.  We expect that the Beverly Brown Professor may be actively engaged with the Initiative on Cities.  Strategic investments in important areas like urban health allow the University to meet its goals of tackling important societal issues through exceptional scholarship, committed, high-quality teaching, and active, practical engagement with one of the critical social issues of our times.
