    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Analytical Scientist/Brewing Chemist, is responsible for chemical/physical lab operations with occasional coverage in microbiology lab and sensory operations. The position will include a possible weekend day, variable hours, (including possible AM shifts) and variable days.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Specifically, the responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

    Run routine flavor compound testing on GC and GC/MS

    Run routine testing such as Bitterness units, color, VDKs, Alcohols, end gravities, haze, pHs, etc.

    Analytical GC/MS analysis of hops and other raw materials to ensure product consistency and give analytical input for buying decisions

    Maintain QC analytical database; includes, but is not limited to data entry, record keeping, trending, data analysis and follow-up with brewing and cellaring teams Ensure general cleanliness of lab and instrumentation; perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and troubleshoot analytical issues.

    Purchase reagents and equipment as needed

    Trouble shoot and maintain lab and field analytical instrumentation

    Stay on top of new methods and analytical equipment

    Work safely and maintain a clean & safe working environment at all times; understand hazards and utilize the appropriate personal protective equipment.

    Complete package testing for CO2, TPO, DO, HSO, AE, alcohol, density, pH, bottle fill heights, crimp checks, secure seal testing, seam checks on cans, and keg testing and sample collection

    Confirm package integrity checks including date code checks, glue checks, proper materials are used etc.

    Pull Micro/Sensory/Analytical samples

    Other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

    Degree in chemistry, biochemistry, food sciences or related field with at least 2 years of college level chemistry. Brewery experience is a plus.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:

    Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals pertaining to quality assurance, sensory, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, and biology or food sciences. Ability to communicate and present information effectively before all levels of employees, sensory panelists, and management.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Ability to perform mathematical analysis and statistical inference, analysis and report on findings.

    REASONING ABILITY:

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to analyze and solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to use logic and methods to solve problems with effective solutions. Ability to develop new and unique ideas. Ability to anticipate future consequences and trends accurately and create effective strategies and plans.

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accrue, precise and reproducible data. Understanding of scientific principles for quality control and quality assurance. Practical knowledge of brewhouse, cellar, and packaging processes/operations. Knowledge of brewing & fermentation process, causes and/or production of off flavors and aromas, and sensory science. Ability to perform mathematical and statistical analysis. Ability to work well in a team environment and ability to manage multiple tasks. Ability to take initiative, act promptly and be proactive with minimal supervision. Excellent organizational and investigative skills. Familiar with standard laboratory instrumentation such as pH meters, spectrophotometer, centrifuges, GC, autoclave, and microscope. Must have flexibility in shift schedule.

    COMPUTER SKILLS AND ABLITIES:

    Ability to operate and use a PC computer, proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs. Ability to create and use spreadsheets as well as draft well written reports.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a lab and production environment. Noise, dust, variable temperature and use of production chemicals are also typical in this work environment. May be required to work and direct in confined spaces, and work with high pressure steam.
