POSITION SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Support Technician is responsible for the proper collection and handling of specimens and insuring accurate identification throughout each step.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Graduate from an accredited Phlebotomist program
National Certification (i.e ASCP for phlebotomist) required
Knowledge of medical terminology required
Proficient on computers with Word, Outlook and keyboard at 30 wpm
Prior experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMI) System preferably on Meditech
SCHEDULE:
Part Time: 32-40 hours a week
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Answers telephone promptly and politely.
Greets patients/residents in a courteous manner.
Verifies correct patient/resident by asking them their name and then matching it with the name on the requisition.
Fills out requisition legibly and with complete information.
Screens patient/resident for pre-test requirements.
Relays to patient/resident accurate test requirements.
Knows which test must be scheduled with timed drawings.
Always keeps patient/resident standing order file accurate and up-to-date.
Performs correct hand washing before and after each sample is obtained.
Always explains to the patient/resident the procedure about to be performed.
Must obtain venous/capillary blood samples.
Gives patient/resident accurate and complete instructions in the collection and preservation of specimens.
Obtains culture specimens indicating date/time of collection and collecting site.
Maintains accuracy in performing bleeding time.
Always follows safety regulations
Always obtains correct sample and accurately labels test tube immediately after venipuncture with patient/resident name, test and test information.
Process specimens within stated stability time.
Splits samples into proper containers (i.e. plastic tube for frozen and sendouts).
Always prepares samples adequately for transportation, preventing leakage and maintaining sample stability.
Picks up specimens.
Prepares specimens for transport to the reference lab.
Keeps work area clean and orderly.
Follows safety policies and procedures in cleaning and disinfecting drawing station and countertops.
Keeps area stocked with supplies.
Communicates effectively with peers, nurses, physicians and patients/residents.
Follows job position dress code.
Knows patients/residents rights and maintains organizational standards of confidentiality.
Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as situations require to maintain Infection Control standards set by the Hospital.
Must submit to any CMS regulated testing.
