    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Health Unit Coordinator of the Med/Surg/Emergency Department is responsible for registration processing for emergency department, Med/Surg, Swing, PCC, and after-hours outpatients, as well as serving as receptionist for all persons requiring information and assistance and performing clerical duties for both departments.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

    · High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.

    · Certification through NHHUC preferred.

    · Proficient on computers with experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel. Keyboard speed of 30 wpm required.

    · Prefer experience with HIS Medical data system preferably Meditech.

    · Must have minimum of 2 years work experience dealing with public, preferably in healthcare.

    · CPR and First Aid training required.

    · Medical terminology preferred.

    · Must have excellent interpersonal skills and experienced with multi-tasking.

    SCHEDULE:

    · 24 hrs per week/12 hour shifts from 6 to 6 either or both days and nights.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS:

    Contact the nursing staff for emergent medical needs.

    Respond promptly to call lights and alarms; completing necessary task or finding appropriate staff to do so. Notify charge nurse, when necessary, in regards to abnormal findings or concerns.

    Welcome patients and family members in a professional manner, and answer patient and visitor questions.

    Interview incoming patients, his/her relatives, or other responsible individuals to obtain patient demographics, financial liability, employer, reason for presentation, and other necessary patient information, including driver’s license/photo identification and insurance cards.

    Communicate with Transfer Center and/or Sheriff dispatch for emergency transportation needs of a patient, including basic transport and helicopter or fixed wing.

    Assist with preparation of transfer packet documents to accompany patient during emergency transfer and/or to fax to meet needs of receiving facility.

    Verify insurance eligibility via Passport/OneSource program.

    Obtain authorization for hospitalization from insurance companies, when required, and each shift will daily review status of all inpatients in regards to any required updates needed by payers.

    Day shift HUC will attend daily Utilization Review meeting to ascertain clerical needs in relation to continued stay and/or completion of paperwork for non-covered stays, and updating the UR Log book with patient status and plan.

    Search Master Patient Index (MPI) thoroughly and assign the correct or new medical record and account number. Notify HIM manager for duplicate medical record numbers.

    Secure all signatures necessary for treatment, release of medical information, assignment of insurance benefits, and payment of services from legally responsible parties.

    Calculate and collect patient liable amounts per established guidelines.

    Enter payment receipts into B/AR module and balance cash drawer at end of each shift.

    Ensure charts are complete, accurate, properly labeled, and scanned into correct electronic record account. Forward paper documents to medical records for review and further processing.

    Complete and distribute paperwork on each patient to appropriate departments, i.e. admission/discharge notifications required by some departments.

    Check physician orders for Medicare patients who may require split billing due to status, i.e. labs performed for a Medicare patient here on a non-skilled stay.

    Practice and adhere to the “Code of Ethics and Business Conduct”.

    Maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment.

    Prioritize duties to be handled during shift to effectively manage time and resources.

    Maintain patient’s rights by adhering to HIPAA guidelines.

    Adhere to the guidelines set forth in the facilities Personnel Policy Manual and Policy and Procedure Manuals.

    Follow instructions received from licensed nursing staff (RN’s & LPN’s).

    Complete assigned duties, following correct policy and procedure, in the event of an emergency or disaster. Initiates Code Yellow when appropriate based on patient flow.

    Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as situations require to maintain Infection Control standards set by the Hospital.

    NON-ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS:

    · Other duties as delegated.

    · Maintains required education credits as per facility policy.

    · Must be willing to assist in other areas as the need arises.

    · Must fill in supply requisitions in a timely manner.

    · All other duties as assigned.
