    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Medical Technologist must be able to accurately perform and report all complex specialized laboratory analyses requiring advanced skills, technical expertise and broad use of independent judgement. Must also perform routine and “STAT” laboratory tests in chemistry, immunology, hematology, serology, immunohematology, urinalysis, microbiology and coagulation.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

    Baccalaureate Degree in chemical, physical or biological science and have at least one (1) year laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing; OR

    Have earned an Associate’s Degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution and have two (2) years of current full laboratory training OR experience, or both, in high complexity testing.

    Nationally recognized certification as (MT (ASCP) or MLT

    Must have proven skills in phlebotomy

    Must be able to recognize problems, identify the cause (technical/instrumental/physiological) & determine solutions.

    Must be able to live within 20 minutes commute of facility, and work on rotating call nights and weekends

    Prior experience working with EMR preferably Meditech. Must have computer skills with Microsoft, Outlook, and keyboard at 20wpm required.

    SCHEDULE:

    One position is for FT Days with some call possible weekend shifts

    One position is for FT Evening shift M-F, no weekends required.

    Must be willing to work past scheduled hours as needed and take call if job requires.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Calmly and accurately performs all tests in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, serology, and coagulation and immunohematology procedure manuals and learn new procedures as they are added to the manuals within 10 working days after rotating through the department.

    Performs the above procedures within the stated turnaround time.

    Performs, analyzes and records daily QC. Interprets QC functions independently according to department policy and ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance standards.

    Documents corrective actions taken when test system (QC) varies from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

    Re-checks questionable result immediately and resolves discrepant, critical or bizarre results independently.

    Confirms and verifies test results by having in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles and instruments/procedures.

    Correlates and interprets laboratory data based on knowledge of physiological conditions affecting test results.

    Recognizes and resolves problems. Troubleshoots and uses alternative methods when available.

    Establishes work priorities for maximum efficiency in response to “STAT” tests, workload and multiple test requests on minimal sample volumes.

    Remains knowledgeable of all department Policies and Procedures.

    Adapts to changes in practices accepting and implementing approved changes without disruption of service.

    Recognizes non-standard situations (mislabeled or unsuitable specimens) and responds according to department policies independently.

    Responds to inquiries about test results, methodology, sensitivity, specificity and specific factors that can influence test results.

    Performs all “STAT” testing and phones results immediately.

    Verifies specimen identification and integrity prior to testing and reports accurate results according to established procedures.

    Reports results in writing, orally or by computer, conforming to established procedures.

    Performs daily, weekly and monthly maintenance according to schedule and records work done.

    Recognizes and documents poor instrument performance and takes appropriate action independently.

    Maintains maintenance charts, temperature charts, workload information, preventative maintenance records, etc. on a daily basis.

    Performs analysis on proficiency testing material in the same manner as patient samples.

    Trains personnel on assigned instruments and procedures.

    Provides technical assistance to technicians, medical director and other laboratory personnel.

    Maintains expertise in laboratory department to assist in problem solving and answering questions.

    Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as situations require to maintain Infection Control standards set by the Hospital.

    Must submit to any CMS regulated testing.

    NON-ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Maintains the work area in a clean, orderly, well-labeled condition. Work area must be neat and clean with a stock of working supplies at the bench. Work area should be clean and clearly defined.

    Utilizes spare time in work related activities contributing to the laboratory’s needs.
