    POSITION TITLE: Surgery & Perioperative Registered Nurse

    SUPERVISED BY: Surgery Manager

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    This position is responsible for safe and timely management of patient care in the Surgery department. This describes the duties when functioning both as a Perioperative Nurse and Circulating Nurse.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required

    Current Idaho Professional Nursing license (RN) required

    Minimum 2 years surgery/circulator experience required

    Must pass the BCH Pharmacological exam upon hire.

    Current CPR/BLS certification required

    ACLS required within 2 months of hire. TNCC & PALS certification preferred.

    Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook

    Conscious Sedation preferred

    Have working knowledge of specialized equipment including, but not limited to, cardiac monitor with defibrillator/pacemaker, wall suction, O2 equipment, IV pumps, blood pressure monitor, pulse oximeter, nurse call and alarms(Pre/Post Op & Circulating RN), prevac sterilization operation and process, chemical and biological indicators, arthroscopic tower equipment, pneumatic tourniquet, endoscopy operations, electro-cautery unit, and fluid irrigation pump(Circulating RN).

    Ability to cross-train in the pre and post-op area.(Circulating RN)

    SCHEDULE:

    Per Diem

    Must be able to work according to the scheduled surgeries (Wednesdays/Thursdays) and provide coverage for pre-op and recovery area whenever needed.

    Essential Job Duties/Requirements for the circulating rn:

    Develop and document patient plan of care based on patient assessment and surgery case.

    Collaborate with Scrub Technician and utilize the surgeon’s preference sheet.

    Explain the procedure to the patient and alleviate any fears and concerns the patient might have.

    Check the patient's vitals, give medications, assist with patient positioning as well as prep the surgical site.

    Provide support to anesthesia (CRNA) as necessary.

    Manage “Time Out” phase utilizing the Surgical Safety Checklist.

    Maintains logbooks on implants and tissues for patient tracking.

    Performs procedures and treatments ordered for patients by the surgeon/physician according to the Nurse’s Practice Act.

    Functions as a Code Blue team member when needed within the facility.

    Demonstrates understanding and utilization of Universal Precautions, Asepsis and Infection Prevention procedures.

    Maintains required education credits per the facility’s policy and procedure with emphasis on pertinent topics related to duties in the department.

    Completes annual departmental competency and skills testing.

    Identifies any risk and safety issues and reports to appropriate personnel.

    Maintains confidentiality of information with respect, courtesy, and accuracy at all times.

    Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as situations require to maintain Infection Control standards set by the Hospital.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS FOR PRE/POST OP RN:

    Manages pre-operative & post-operative care, monitors the patient’s stability, safely and correctly administers medications.

    Performs interventions to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion as close to baseline as possible.

    Performs interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological systems as close to baseline as possible.

    Performs interventions to ensure patient normothermia.

    Functions as a Code Blue team member when needed within the facility.

    Develops and documents a plan of care based on patient assessment and scheduled surgical procedure.

    Actively involving the patient’s support person/persons in the decision affecting his/her perioperative plan of care and rehabilitation process.

    Assesses the knowledge level of the patient and/or designated support person and provides education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management and wound management during recovery at home.

    Performs procedures and treatments ordered for patients by the surgeon/physician according to the Nurse’s Practice Act.

    Demonstrates understanding and utilization of Universal Precautions, Asepsis and Infection Prevention procedures.

    Maintains required education credits per the facility’s policies and procedures with emphasis on pertinent topics related to duties in the department.
