    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Patient Safety Sitter (PSS) provides quality patient safety monitoring services under supervision of a licensed professional. The PSS proactively maintains a safe environment for the patient by provided 1:1 continuous monitoring and reporting potential unsafe and harmful behaviors.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

    High school diploma or equivalent.

    CNA certification is preferred.

    Current BLS certification required (can obtain within 2 months of hire).

    Safe Sitter training upon hire.

    Prefer previous experience in a healthcare setting.

    Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.

    Must be able to remain calm and manage verbal/physical responses in stressful situations.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS:

    Maintain a safe environment for the patient through 1:1 continuous monitoring that faces the patient at all times and near enough proximity to intervene if necessary, including during bathroom and shower activities.

    Comply with all related polices requiring a patient safety sitter role (restraint and Care & Safety of Psychiatric Patients guidelines).

    Practice proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

    Report any and all employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the event notification system.

    Able to maintain potential exposure to blood and body fluids protection protocols.

    Monitor and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, policies and procedures related to area of responsibility.

    Identify potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process.

    Perform and/or document components of safety monitoring and general care needs (eating, hydration, and/or elimination).

    Communicate and interact with patient and family in a therapeutic and respectful manner with intent to minimize escalation of behaviors.

    Monitor for behavior changes and escalate any untoward events (i.e. behavior changes, violent behavior) to appropriate staff and respond appropriately to direction given by healthcare team members.

    Accompany patient to medical procedures to maintain 1:1 continuous monitoring requirements.

    Accurately document data collected and behaviors observed on assigned patient in EMR, according to established time frames (may be paper documentation).

    Participate in transfer of care (patient safety sitter to patient safety sitter, patient safety sitter to nurse, patient safety sitter to other care team members); communicate any special considerations, care priorities, and support needs as appropriate.

    Maintain patient’s rights; including the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.

    Demonstrate all competencies of the job: initial and ongoing/annual competencies.

    Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as situations require maintaining Infection Control standards set by the Hospital.

    Must submit to COVID testing as required by CMS.

    NON-ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/REQUIREMENTS:

    Adheres to the uniform and hygiene requirements as set forth in the Personnel Policy.
