    POSITION: Early Literacy Specialist

    LOCATION: Various schools across Santa Ana

    COMPENSATION: $12.00-$13.00/Hour (based on education and experience)

    HOURS PER WEEK: 12.5 hours per week (MUST BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE AN OPEN/CONSISTENT SCHEDULE:

    MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY BETWEEN 8:00AM-11:00AM.

    EARLY LITERACY MENTOR PROFESSIONAL  

    Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana (BGCSA) is looking for motivated individuals with a passion for working with children and making a 

    positive impact in the area of early literacy.  In partnership with Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) and United Way, the 

    BGCSA is committed to supporting the development of youth in Santa Ana by growing their literacy skills and improving their overall 

    academic success.  If you are interested in helping youth and have a passion for reading, this could be the job for you! 

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    Early Literacy Specialists are assigned to various SAUSD sites to work with children in grades K‐3 on a weekly basis to deliver 

    small‐group early literacy intervention.  During group sessions, EL Specialists use reading level appropriate materials, provided by the 

    BGCSA, to practice and develop literacy skills ranging from phonics sounds to blending and comprehension. Mentors will facilitate a 

    variety of reading strategies and guide group discussions about the reading material.  Most Specialists, instructors will make reading 

    fun and entertaining for youth.  Other duties include: communicating with teachers and school personnel, progress monitoring 

    (student assessments), attendance tracking, and data tracking for student case load. 

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Minimum 45 college units 
    • Available Monday‐Friday between 8:00am‐11:00am 
    • Ability to manage and instruct groups of 6‐8 K‐3rd graders. 
    • Ability to multitask 
    • Acknowledges a variety of learning styles and differentiates instruction to maximize student success.  
    • Strong interpersonal skills 
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
    • Attention to details, deadlines, and documentation

      

    EXPECTATIONS: 

    • Participate in all curriculum trainings and ongoing coaching sessions related to Early Literacy programming. 
    • Follow lesson plans and curriculum schedule 
    • Communicate with teachers, administrators and school personnel on a regular basis
