    The Braille Institute is seeking a part time Youth Assistant for their Los Angeles, CA, (90029) location.

    Who is Braille Institute?

    Braille Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is to positively transform the lives of those with vision loss. We offer a broad range of free programs, classes and services serving thousands of students of all ages helping to demonstrate that vision rehabilitation is a beginning, not an end.

    We serve the community from seven centers, and hundreds of community outreach locations throughout Southern California, and lead popular national programs like Braille Challenge and Cane Quest. Our staff and volunteers understand losing your vision can be scary, but we believe it is not the end of independence but a new way of living.

    About the role:

    The part time Youth Assistant will assist staff with facilitating youth programs.

    Additional duties include:

    • Assisting with instruction and providing assistance to students during scheduled programs;
    • Assisting in monitoring programs and activities to ensure a safe environment is always maintained;
    • Notifying the instructor of any potential safety issues or other problems;
    • Providing a sighted guide for children as needed to better assist students with program participation and enrichment;
    • Making recommendations for student activities to keep participants engaged and learning;
    • May require driving a company vehicle to transport visually impaired children between the regional center or designated training location and activities within the local area.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required, college coursework preferred;
    • Basic knowledge of training as applied to children with disabilities is needed;
    • At least six (6) months of experience working with children’s programs and working with special needs children, youth, & young adults;
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills; Valid driving license with a clean driving record;
    • Ability to work a varied schedule, including weekends, extended hours, and evenings;
    • Ability to learn and participate in physical and teaching activities; CPR & First Aid certified preferred.
    • Schedules are set a week in advance and will usually involve 2 Saturdays per month.
