__The Brooklyn Movement Center (BMC) grows Black social justice leadership and people power in Bed-Stuy & Crown Heights. BMC sustains long-time residents in their fight for the most basic needs our community has: sustainable housing, food security and community safety. We are building a political home for BLACK JOY, BLACK RESISTANCE and BLACK FUTURES in Central Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Deep, BMC’s citizen journalism arm, is a semi-independent, multi-media platform that critically examines and reports on political, social, cultural and economic change in Black Brooklyn and beyond.
WE’RE LOOKING FOR a versatile and experienced journalist who thrives in Black community spaces and is adept at converting ideas into digital content and events. A competitive candidate is conversant in the Central Brooklyn political scene, New York social movements, and local electoral maneuvering.
_YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR: _
PRODUCING BROOKLYN DEEP’S THIRD RAIL PODCAST -- Work closely with the Executive Editor and other staff to create and post a monthly talk show podcast. This includes:
Researching issues and generating show and format ideas
Booking and prepping show guests and the host
Scripting episodes
Coordinating the engineering and production of Third Rail with a recording engineer and technical support.
Managing the distribution of Third Rail and it’s web- and social media-based properties
PRODUCING POWER LINE, BROOKLYN DEEP’S ELECTORAL COVERAGE - Work with BMC and Brooklyn Deep staff to produce events and original reporting on 2021 NYC elections. This includes:
Organizing, curating and staging a series of candidate forums for city council and city wide office
Producing original reporting on the battleground races
Populating the landing page for Power Line content
Conducting and distributing interviews with electoral candidates
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS NEEDED:
At least two years’ experience in political and/or issue-based reporting
Expertise in a range of digital and multi-media production with an emphasis on audio/podcasts and narrative
Experience and skill in event production
Deep familiarity with Brooklyn and NYC politics and social movements
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
$60,000 with full benefits.
