    Who We Are:

Heartwood Community School is a community-focused, tuition-free charter school serving Jasper, Beaufort, and Hampton Counties in South Carolina. We believe in educating the whole child—nurturing each student academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Honoring every child's unique journey, we bridge home and school to foster a compassionate, empowering environment where students feel seen and valued.

Our mission goes beyond academics; we guide students to become resilient problem-solvers, compassionate community builders, globally minded citizens, emotionally intelligent leaders, and lifelong learners. Embracing mistakes as part of growth, we equip students to thrive in school and life—ready to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.

    The Role:

Heartwood Community School is seeking a responsible and caring Bus Monitor to ensure the safety, well-being, and respectful behavior of students during morning and afternoon bus routes. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Bus Monitor plays a critical role in creating a positive and secure experience for students during daily transportation to and from school.

The ideal candidate is a calm, observant, and proactive individual who prioritizes student safety and understands the importance of maintaining order on school transportation. This person will be a valued member of our school community and a daily presence in students' lives—contributing to a safe, respectful, and supportive start and end to each school day.

    Responsibilities:

    Student Supervision and Safety

    • Ride the bus each morning and afternoon to supervise students and ensure safety during transportation.
    • Monitor student behavior throughout the ride, promoting a respectful and calm atmosphere on the bus.
    • Assist students with safely boarding and exiting the bus, including younger children or students needing support.
    • Conduct visual checks to ensure all students exit the bus at the appropriate stops.
    • Respond to emergencies and report any incidents following school protocols.

    Attendance and Behavior Management

    • Take and record student attendance daily for both AM and PM bus routes.
    • Communicate consistently with the Director of Operations regarding absences or student behavior concerns.
    • Support the driver by addressing minor disciplinary issues and escalating more serious concerns appropriately.
    • Model and reinforce school values and expectations during transport.

    Collaboration and Communication

    • Maintain a professional, caring rapport with students, families, school staff, and transportation partners.
    • Provide timely updates to school leadership about any patterns of concern, including behavior, attendance, or safety issues.

    Skills and Qualifications:

    • A deep commitment to Heartwood Community School's mission and whole-child philosophy.
    • Strong communication, observation, and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Ability to remain calm and patient while managing a group of students in a dynamic environment.
    • Dependable, punctual, and committed to maintaining a safe space for students.
    • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively.

    Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Prior experience working with children or supervising youth is preferred.
    • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain is a plus.

    Compensation:

    • This is a part-time, 10-month role aligned with the academic calendar.
    • AM and PM shifts required daily (estimated 4-5 hours per day).
    • The daily rate for this position is $175.00.
    • All employees are eligible to participate in school-wide professional development and team-building activities.

To uphold our commitment to equitable and fair compensation, we offer a competitive salary and have a no-negotiation policy.
