    Job Description

    CASES is one of New York City’s leading providers of alternative-to-incarceration (ATI) and behavioral health treatment programs for justice-involved individuals who have mental illness. CASES is implementing new program models within our citywide ATI programs for youth and young adults and for people with mental illness and serious mental illness. The Psychologist is a senior member of the ATI Centralized Screening and Assessment Team responsible for conducting evaluations to identify eligible participants, preparing reports in a timely manner, and when necessary providing advocacy to criminal justice stakeholders (e.g., prosecutors and judges) related to assessment findings and potential ATI recommendations. CASES seeks a Psychologist with knowledge of forensic mental health assessment and treatment planning. This position involves spending time in each CASES court office (the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens) to evaluate the complex and high risk cases referred to CASES for diversion.  

    RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Conduct violence risk assessment utilizing the HCR-20 v3 assessment and develop comprehensive evaluation reports presenting a defendant’s eligibility for ATI participation.
    • Formulate diagnoses and develop individualized ATI program  plans  
    • Provide consultation to clinical supervisors and intake coordinators, interpreting clinical. findings and recommending treatment interventions 
    • Participate as a member. of the core ATI implementation assessment team, including working with consultants to implement the Short Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) adult and adolescent versions to assess individuals for participation in CASES’ ATI programs. 
    • Administer, score, analyze, and interpret psychological screenings and assessments. 
    • Write formal evaluation reports, in compliance with ATI assessment requirements and quality standards, including court-ready reports in advance of scheduled court dates and in response to emergency or expedited situations. 
    • Provide clinical consultation on problematic cases to other clinical staff and provide review and feedback to other assessment team members 
    • Support clinical intake staff working with individuals who are incompetent, ensuring appropriate expedited evaluation and treatment planning. 
    • Conduct screening and assessment of individuals referred from Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center who have received restoration of competency services following arrest and pretrial detention. 
    • Participate in clinical supervision, case review meetings, staff meetings, and in-service training programs. 
    • Participate in relevant quality improvement, staff training, coaching, and planning activities. 
    • Supervise psychology interns and externs. 
    • Provide culturally-competent services ensuring the consideration of the role of ethnic/racial, cultural, social, economic, and behavioral factors in the accessibility, availability, and delivery of evaluation services.

       

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • PhD or PsyD with active NY State license or the ability to obtain licensure within six months.
    • At least one year of post-training experience as a Forensic Psychologist in criminal justice setting.  
    • Ability to work independently and strong advocacy skills.
    • Bilingual Spanish speaking applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. 
    • Preference for experience working with youth and young adults and people with mental illness.
