Position Title: CCTV Operator / Security Camera Monitor

Summary / Purpose
The CCTV Operator monitors live and recorded video feeds from CCTV, surveillance, and security camera systems to detect suspicious or criminal activity, ensure safety, and provide video evidence when needed. The operator is responsible for timely response, logging incidents, coordinating with security or law enforcement, and maintaining accurate records of events.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor multiple surveillance cameras and video systems (live and recorded) to detect and deter theft, vandalism, unauthorized entry, safety violations, or other incidents.
Review archived footage as needed based on incident reports or requests and produce video clips or stills for investigations or legal needs.
Operate CCTV control equipment: video matrix, DVR/NVR systems, PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) controls, video analytics, motion detection, video review tools.
Maintain logs and records of observed incidents, camera status, malfunctions, and maintenance needs.
Respond to alarms, motion sensors, or system alerts by shifting camera views or initiating follow-up procedures (e.g., notifying security patrols or management).
Coordinate with security personnel, local law enforcement, or building management, providing video feeds or real-time description when required.
Conduct routine checks of camera systems (lens cleanliness, alignment, focus, camera angle) and report or arrange repairs.
Ensure systems uptime, conduct periodic backup of footage, and manage video storage and archival retention according to policy.
Maintain confidentiality and follow data protection policies when handling sensitive footage.
Stay alert during long shifts; maintain situational awareness and effective attention over multiple screens.
Possibly assist or cross-train in access control systems, alarm monitoring, or building security functions.
Qualifications / Skills
High school diploma or GED required
Prior experience in security operations, surveillance, loss prevention, or monitoring center preferred
Familiarity with CCTV systems, NVR/DVR, video management software, PTZ controls, video analytics
Strong attention to detail, observational skills, ability to multitask and remain vigilant
Good communication skills (oral and written) for reporting, coordinating, and writing incident reports
Ability to work shifts (nights, weekends, holidays) and/or rotate in 24/7 schedule
Basic computer skills and ability to use monitoring software
Ability to maintain composure under pressure or when viewing otherwise distressing content
Integrity and discretion when handling sensitive or security-related information
Background check may be required
Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations regarding video surveillance, privacy, and data retention (depending on jurisdiction)
Working Conditions
Primarily indoor work in a control room or monitoring center environment
Long durations of screen monitoring; periods of low physical activity
Occasional night or overnight shifts
Managing multiple screens, responding to alarms or escalations
Coordination with security teams or law enforcement
Limited physical demands, but ability to remain alert and responsive
