About the Role:
Ammons Transportation Service Inc is looking for a skilled and dependable CDL School Bus & Fleet Maintenance Mechanic to join our team in Chicago, IL. This is a hands-on role where you'll keep our fleet running safely and efficiently — making a real difference in the lives of students and riders every day. Responsibilities:
Perform routine preventive maintenance on school buses and fleet vehicles, including oil changes, brake inspections, and fluid checks
Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on diesel-powered vehicles
Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure DOT and safety compliance
Repair or replace worn or defective parts including engines, transmissions, and suspension components
Maintain accurate maintenance logs and service records for all fleet vehicles
Respond to road calls and perform emergency roadside repairs as needed
Collaborate with dispatch and operations to minimize vehicle downtime
Requirements:
Valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) required
2+ years of experience in diesel engine repair and fleet maintenance
Experience with school buses or commercial vehicles strongly preferred
Working knowledge of DOT regulations and vehicle safety standards
Ability to diagnose issues using computerized diagnostic tools and equipment
Must supply own basic hand tools
Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a safety-first mindset
