Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Charge Nurse has an overall responsibility for resident care in the facility. All the following duties are essential unless otherwise noted:

1. Evaluation of resident needs, conditions, and care, and assist in developing nursing care plans for individual residents, including rehabilitative and restorative activities and instruction in self-help.
2. Communication with family members regarding the condition and progress of the resident, including in-person discussion and answering of telephone inquiries.
3. Assisting the physicians in rounds, reviewing physicians’ orders, ordering medications, maintenance of the residents’ medical records, and transcription of physician orders.
4. Requisition of the necessary supplies, equipment, linens, emergency drugs, and other materials to meet the residents’ needs. This also requires that the Charge Nurse be responsible for making sure the equipment is in good working order.
5. Maintains unit records, including charting duties and maintenance of narcotic records.
6. Responsible for the administration of all resident medications and treatments as ordered by the physician on a regular and prn basis and for assessment of any potential or actual side effects.
7. Arranging the schedules, appointments, and transportation necessary for residents in connection with diagnostic, therapeutic, dental, or medical services.
8. Responsible for the admission, discharge, or transfer of residents.
9. Responsible for the work assignments of the certified nursing assistants and other nursing staff members with the authority to make changes and revise duties to meet resident needs. Is responsible to ensure that staff members complete assigned duties.
10. Responsible for the authorization of overtime, disciplining of subordinate nursing employees, and for recommendation of termination if needed. Responsible for assisting with the performance evaluations of all staff supervised. Where necessary, the Charge Nurse is to provide counseling to employees on performance improvement.
11. Assist with the orientation of all new nursing employees.
12. Assist the Director of Nursing with the implementation of policies and procedures for the facility
13. Make daily round to evaluate the emotional and physical needs of residents during the tour of duty.
14. Ability to reasonably conform to all rules and policies of the facility.

Qualifications

RN or LPN Certification
