    Job Description

    Programs are designed to offer practical, real-world practice with the issues that are shaping the modern business sector. On-ground and hybrid classes meet monthly and on weekends. The Dean of Academics is a full-time administrative position that reports directly to the Provost. The Dean provides leadership in the myriad operational responsibilities associated with achieving the teaching and learning objectives of the university and in alignment WSCUC standards. Working with the Provost, the Dean is responsible for managing the day-to-day academic activities of all academic programs. This position oversees curriculum management, recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff, policy development, resolution of student issues, and maintenance of WSCUC accreditation.

     

    This position coordinates with other offices responsible for contributing to the university’s success; this includes but is not limited to: Registrar Office, Admissions, Marketing, Alumni Relations, Accounting, and Student Services.

    DUTIES

    • Provide transformative leadership and advocacy for the department and CiAM as a whole.

    • Create a strategic vision and manage strategic planning processes aligned with broader university strategic goals.

    • Retain and graduate students through expanding and improving the educational experience including academic advising and career support services for all students, work closely with faculty, department and program chairs, to advance the educational mission in accordance with the principles of shared governance, lead and support accreditation initiatives, continue to diversify the curriculum, and encourage and manage the growth and vitality of the academic disciplines through program reviews and assessment.

    • Promote and support faculty excellence in teaching, research, and service, including oversight of the promotion and tenure process; mentor or oversee mentoring of junior faculty and review all annual growth plans including student feedback, recruit and retain high quality and diverse faculty and staff, including opportunities for professional development. Ensure that all faculty and staff evaluations are done at least once a year and approve such evaluations.

    • Promote the value of management as a liberal education as envisioned by the mission and vision of the university.

    • Support and advance CiAM’s assessment efforts and strategies.

    • Oversee the recruitment, appointment, review, and professional development of faculty and staff.

    • Identify, attract, and strategically manage financial resources for the university.

    • Provide internal leadership and mentorship to department chairs, faculty, staff, and students.

    • Assure ongoing quality and continuous improvement in the university’s academic program in both traditional and online programs.

    • Work collegially and collaboratively with leadership across campus to support the priorities of the university.

    • Foster and support relationships with the state and regional business community, encouraging and supporting business and economic outreach activities and fostering collaboration among the outreach units.

    • Manage the scheduling of courses and supervision of the part-time faculty.

    • Manage the scheduling of courses for full-time faculty.

    • Work closely with the Provost and other department supervisors on university-wide strategic initiatives.

    • Develop the budget for the academic department and advocate for resources.

    • Develop relations with the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors in the greater Los Angeles region and surrounding communities to develop/support (1) internships, (2) placements & (3) research opportunities for faculty.

    • Other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree in Business, Management, Public Administration or other related field from an accredited program or school.

    • 12 years of teaching and research as a regular college/university faculty member at a regionally accredited institution.

    • 6 years of significant administrative experience, at the department chair level or above, at a regionally accredited 4-year private non-profit or public university.

    • Experience in higher education, specifically knowledge in student affairs, retention, advising, co-curriculum, best practices in student successes/retentions, graduation policies and requirements, academic honesty and integrity, university’s academic operations, and trend in business education and higher education.

    • Experience in higher education, specifically knowledge of curriculum, current standards, practices, and trends in business education.

    • An appreciation, commitment, and understanding of Peter F. Drucker’s philosophies of management.

    • Experience in managing operations.

    • Ability to facilitate positive relationships and deal equitably with faculty, staff, and students (current and alumni).

    • Identify complex problems and review information to develop and evaluate options and solutions.

    • Ability to train and supervise employees.

    • Ensure the learning management system (LMS) is up to date with curricular offerings, program revisions, and tools supporting best practices for both students and faculty.

    • Knowledge/experience regarding accreditation standards and process.

    • An appreciation of, commitment to, and demonstrated record of research and scholarship.

    • Commitment and record of leading and partnering on curricular and programmatic innovation and creative developmental initiatives.

    • Interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial managerial acumen—ability to connect and manage across a diversity of programs and curriculums.

    • Demonstrated ability to develop strong relations with the business community including private, public, and non-profit sectors.

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

    • Effective decision making and organizational skills.

    • Demonstrated record of: commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; faculty advocacy within a shared governance structure; excellence in teaching, scholarship and research; commitment to promoting excellence in teaching, scholarship and research at the undergraduate and/or graduate level; commitment to inclusive leadership, engaging a diverse and productive faculty, staff, and student body; team building and collaborative initiatives; budget management; and strategic planning initiatives.
