    CLASS SUMMARY The Mayor's Office is Seeking a Student Intern! The Mayor's Internship Program is designed to immerse college students in a professional public service setting where they can interact with a cross-section of civic and community leaders. By investing in the next generation of leaders through the Mayor's Internship Program, it is our goal to attract, retain, and foster the growth of young professionals in Spokane.The selected Intern will often serve as a point of contact for the Office of the Mayor and perform general clerical work which requires the application of independent judgment based on comprehensive knowledge of city government departments and administrative procedures. The Intern will be assigned projects on a case-by-case basis which could vary based on the student's area of study and the present needs of the Office of the Mayor. The Intern may have regular contact with community leaders, citizens, and City employees and, therefore, must be able to obtain or supply accurate information. Much of the information the Intern has access to may be highly confidential information that cannot be discussed. Duties are performed under normal office working conditions and require exceptional attention to detail to prevent errors. Working Condition and Physical Demands: Work is conducted primarily in an office setting. Incumbents in this classification are expected to communicate verbally, by telephone and in-person, as well as communicate in writing. A computer terminal is used and this requires the use of repetitive arm-hand movements. Schedule If selected for this position, the intern will be expected to work between 12-18 hours per week M-F at Spokane City Hall. Work hours will occur between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; however, the selected intern's class schedule will determine daily work hours.The length of this internship will be at least four (4) months, but will not exceed six (6) months. EXAMPLES OF JOB FUNCTIONSThe following Responsibilities and Requirements are functions the individual who holds or desires the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation. Key Responsibilities: Support front desk staff by answering incoming calls efficiently and professionally, responding to each caller, taking detailed messages, assisting with general questions, and making referrals for proper handlingMaintain regular contact with City departments, other governmental agencies, businesses, civic organizations and leaders, media, and citizens in the course of City businessAssist with visitors and/or meeting attendees as needed, routing them to the appropriate person as circumstances warrantPrepare short, written material such as briefings, speeches, memos, or blog posts Staff the Mayor at various community events, take photographs to document events and engagementAssist with website updates as needed to ensure accurate information is available to the publicMaintain filing and records in accordance with public records law and procedures, Chapter 42.56 RCWAttend and support Mayor, Policy Advisor, City Administrator, or Director at various City Council committee meetingsTyping and proofreading various documents as neededConduct independent research on various policy proposals, projects of significance, contracts, or historical dataCoordinate community engagement opportunities in conjunction with City-wide volunteer program, Spokane Gives, and other external partners as neededPerform other duties as assigned by Director or as judgment or necessity dictatesMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSHave obtained a high-school diploma or GED, and be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at any local college or University, to include Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, Washington State University, Community Colleges of Spokane, and Whitworth UniversityAny combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifyingMajors or Minors in Business Administration, Public Relations, Communications, Political Science, Law, or English are recommended Behavioral Standards: As a representative of the City of Spokane, the Intern is subject to the City's Code of Ethics set forth in Chapter 1.04A of the Spokane Municipal Code.
