Job Description We are looking for a Principal (Deep Analytics focus) to join the Portfolio Value Creation (PVC) team during an exciting period of transformative change and growth. PVC partners with global Investment Groups across a portfolio of c. 80 assets and works out of offices in Toronto, London, Hong Kong and San Francisco. PVC consists of c. 25 experienced professionals with investment, consulting and corporate backgrounds, operating across the portfolio and throughout asset lifecycles.

PVC is responsible for driving value creation across CPP Investments’ global portfolio of material direct equity investments. The team is active across the entire asset lifecycle with selective pre-deal and consistent post-deal involvement. Examples of the work we do include support complex diligences, onboard new investments into the portfolio, and identify and drive initiatives that improve business performance such as growing revenue and improving costs.

CPP Investments has a longer term ambition of driving a truly differentiated data-led and technology enabled approach to private investing. As part of this journey, PVC is building a world class data science deployment team that will use advanced analytics to evaluate deals and work with the management teams of our portfolio companies to drive value creation.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Head of Portfolio Value Creation, you will play a lead role in executing data-led projects to directly solve real-world business challenges. These challenges will span the value chain of R&D, product development, sales, marketing, manufacturing, customer service, etc. While you will spend the majority of your time working with portfolio companies, you will also have the opportunity to work closely with our Investment Groups and internal technical teams to bring a data-led approach across the investing lifecycle, including how we buy, sell and monitor our portfolio companies.

You will:

• Work shoulder-to-shoulder with your PVC colleagues and portfolio companies to identify opportunities where data-driven approaches will create value in portfolio companies
• Lead technical projects end-to-end from scoping, planning, defining milestones, resourcing, managing execution day to day, ensuring deployment of solutions and transfer of knowledge
• Project manage a multi-disciplinary team (data scientists, data engineers, machine learning engineers, software developers) to ensure agile delivery of implementable solutions
• Bring honed business judgement to ensure the team focuses on high-value, impactful projects that address fundamental business challenges
• Collaborate with key stakeholders including soliciting input, testing hypotheses, surfacing challenges, and other activities to ensure the solution is actionable within a portfolio company
• Deliver insightful messages in a clear and concise manner and act as a translator of technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders
• Ensure a strong discipline of documentation and library development to enable scalability and transferability of projects to other opportunities
• Support Investment Groups and CPP Investments’ technical teams by bringing advanced analytics approaches to due diligence, portfolio company monitoring, and other activities across the asset life-cycle
• Help build the new multi-disciplinary Deep Analytics deployment team within PVC to deploy data-led methods with portfolio companies.

Qualifications You will bring:

• 3+ years of experience in leading multi-disciplinary analytics teams
• Track record of applying advanced data and analytics to deliver material commercial impact
• Strong technical project management toolkit including experience with agile methodologies
• Expertise in leading multi-disciplinary technical teams that build POCs and deploy productize data science models at scale
• Familiarity with applications of machine learning, multi-variate analysis, forecasting and other advanced analytics techniques and how they can be applied to real-world challenges
• Strong business judgement based on deep understanding of operational and commercial aspects of business and an ability to hone-in on the key questions
• Experience in working in complex stakeholder environments
• Excellent people leadership, track record of leading successful cross-functional teams
• Excellent communication skills including an ability to explain complex analytical concepts to a wide variety of stakeholders
• Curiosity and courage in taking on challenging problems across variety of business areas and/or industries
• Master’s degree or equivalent is considered an asset
• Conduct consistent with our Guiding Principles of Integrity, Partnership and High Performance
