FOR THE 2020-2021 SERVICE YEAR, RESILIENCE CORPS NC OFFERS A LIVING STIPEND OF $17,000 FOR 11 MONTHS, HEALTH INSURANCE REIMBURSEMENT FOR PREMIUMS, CHILDCARE ASSISTANCE, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES (INDIVIDUAL TRAININGS, ENROLLMENT IN NC ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM, AND CONFERENCES IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE NC COMMISSION ON VOLUNTEERISM). PARTICIPANTS WHO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM WILL RECEIVE A SEGAL EDUCATION AWARD OF $6,195 FROM THE NATIONAL SERVICE TRUST.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The purpose of an Eno River Association Environmental Educator is to create environmental stewards through growth in understanding of natural resources, build community support and diversify support in underrepresented populations for the conservation and protection of the Eno River basin through educational leadership and programming. Emphasis is promoting environmental and conservation awareness to local schools, neighborhoods, and community groups while building relationships with the natural resources of the Eno River watershed. All education efforts use the Eno River natural resources as the basis for teaching larger concepts.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Serve as an environmental education resource at community, school, or park events
• Prepare, promote, schedule, and conduct school, day camp, or afterschool field trips
• Prepare, promote, schedule, and lead public/community environmental interpretation and education programs
• Prepare, promote, schedule, and conduct outreach programs to schools & community groups
• Provide Eno information at community table/booth events
• Prepare, promote, schedule, and lead youth & community natural resources stewardship projects
• Research, compose, and post Eno environmental education through social media and newsletters
• Promote Eno River Association summer camps in the course of leading educational programming 
• Serve on the management team for Eno River Association summer day camps
• Report programming statistics to Supervisor and Board of Directors

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Environmental Education, Natural Resources, Forestry, Wildlife Biology, Zoology, Geology, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Biology, or related field
• General knowledge of ecosystems and earth sciences, with the capability to quickly learn sufficient local natural, cultural, and historical resources to conduct programming
• Valid driver’s license
• Capable written and verbal communication skills
• Good initiative
• Capable of working independently without direct supervision
• Outgoing and friendly personality
• Organized, ability to multi-task and problem solve, with attention to detail
• Curious and inquisitive regarding the natural world
• Comfortable handling insects, bugs, reptiles, amphibians
• Basic understanding of social media
• Works well on a team
• Bilingual Spanish/English skills not required but preferred
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, creatively and effectively with people of all ethnic, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds
• Must be at least 18 years of age, be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States; Must have a legal driver’s license and consent to a criminal history check
• Demonstrated computer abilities in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint; webpage and social media background a plus

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Able to drive a pickup truck and panel van (automatic transmission)
• Able to hike up to 5 miles on rugged trails while conducting interpretation and education programming
• Able to use basic digging, prying, cutting, and transporting hand tools in the execution of trail construction and maintenance for up to 4 hours
• Tolerance for working outdoors in typical North Carolina weather ranging from hot and humid, to cold and wet and sometimes frozen
• Able to wade in a flowing river with a rocky uneven bottom
• Able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds for at least 200 yards

PREFERRED SCHEDULE

Most work time will be Monday-Friday typically between 8:00AM and 5:00PM. Employee will have flexibility to adjust workday length for program offering advantages providing target hours are met. Employee can expect to lead a single educational program or stewardship activity most weekends either on a Friday night, Saturday, or a Sunday afternoon as is most appropriate to research target audience. Holiday work on New Year’s Day, Independence Day, and King Day of Service Holiday IF allowed by AmeriCorps policy, as these are major event days for the Association. Occasional but uncommon work at evening events and reporting to the board of directors. Occasional night-time interpretation and education programming 1-2 times per month. Weekday schedules will be reduced commensurately to accommodate weekend and evening work requirements.
