    This position is with Dig In! located in Burnsville, North Carolina. Our mission is to build and maintain a volunteer-operated community garden and, through established partnerships with local hunger relief agencies, provide fresh fruits and vegetables to people within our community who are in need of food assistance. The garden will also serve an educational function, to teach, inspire, and empower people in Yancey County to grow their own healthy foods using both traditional and modern sustainable methods. THIS POSITION WILL HAVE A START DATE BETWEEN MAY 18TH AND 22ND, WITH THE DATE BEING NO LATER THAN JUNE 1ST 2020. THE SERVICE TERM IS FOR 6 MONTHS FROM FIRST DAY OF SERVICE.

    For this 6 month PART TIME (20 hours a week) 450 service hour term of service as an AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team member. The AmeriCorps program will offer a living stipend of $4,092 for 6 months (paid twice a month, on the 15th and last business day). Participants who complete the program will receive an Segal Education Award of $ 1,638.89 from the National Service Trust. Both the living stipend and Education Award is taxable income per federal regulation. (The living stipend may increase based on program participation)

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    To assist Dig In! and local food organizations in Yancey County develop and implement protocol that increases the access to local, fresh produce using the highest measures of food safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    Assist in the creation, testing, and dissemination of on-farm and gardening practices to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in the handling of produce destined for the local food system.

    Provide technical assistance to gardeners, farmers, and organizations in implementing practices at the farm and garden level to safely harvest, wash, and package produce for public consumption in the emergency food system.

    Assist organizational leaders develop plans and implement food handling practices for three local food programs supplying fresh produce to vulnerable and low-income households in Yancey County.

    Assist Dig In! staff in the harvesting, washing, packaging and distribution activities that provide fresh, local food to food insecure households. 

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Proficient writing skills to develop written protocol that can be understood by a general public.
    • Knowledge of agricultural production at the farm and garden level
    • Developed interpersonal skills to relate to a variety of stakeholders creating food security in a rural food system
    • A basic knowledge of food system functions
    • Proficiency in Google Doc programs including word processing and spreadsheets
    • Ability to perform physical labor including but not limited to lifting crates of produce

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Computer work to create documents
    • Washing, packaging and distribution of vegetables
    • Community meetings Garden and farm site visits

     

    PREFERRED SCHEDULE

    A person will be asked to work the majority of their hours Monday -Friday between the hours of 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM. The schedule will be determined in conjunction with the member’s site supervisor on a bi-weekly basis as it relates to the programming and benchmarks established in the work plan.
