    This position is with The American Red Cross--Eastern NC, located in Durham, North Carolina. The American RED CROSS, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International RED CROSS Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies

    THIS POSITION WILL HAVE A START DATE BETWEEN MAY 18TH AND 22ND, WITH THE DATE BEING NO LATER THAN JUNE 1ST 2020. THE SERVICE TERM IS FOR 6 MONTHS FROM FIRST DAY OF SERVICE. **PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE UPLOADED ALL OF THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS – RESUME, COVER LETTER, STATE OR FEDERAL ID, COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS, BIRTH CERTIFICATE (IF US PASSPORT NOT UPLOADED). If required documents are not uploaded at time of application, any offer for employment will be withheld until they are provided. All AmeriCorps Members must submit to having a National Sex Offender, State of Residence (if state is different than NC), State of NC, and Federal FBI Background check conducted.     For this 6 month PART TIME (20 hours a week) 450 service hour term of service as an AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team member. The AmeriCorps program will offer a living stipend of $4,092 for 6 months (paid twice a month, on the 15th and last business day). Participants who complete the program will receive an Segal Education Award of $ 1,638.89 from the National Service Trust. Both the living stipend and Education Award is taxable income per federal regulation. (The living stipend may increase based on program participation)

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    The purpose of the Bio-Medical positions will be to support four roles that directly impact building capacity and achieving a stable blood supply. These positions allow us to to meet daily demands to help build the blood supply through careful screening supporting the blood donation process and timely delivery of the products to and from the lab and to the hospitals. In addition, these members help to recruit and encourage healthy donors to continue with another donation. 

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    The Bio-medical Support positions will be a combination of four volunteer roles.  These roles support our Durham Facility which houses one of the largest blood testing laboratories in North Carolina and our local community blood drives and delivery of blood products to local hospitals.

    1. Blood Donor Ambassadors greet and thank and support blood donors at the beginning and end of the donation process.  They help to ensure a good experience and help donors schedule their next appointments.

    2. Bio-medical Transportation Specialists travel to and from local blood drives picking up blood products in a timely manner and returning to our Biomedical Testing Lab.  They also assist with delivering blood products (including Covid-19 plasma) to local hospitals.

    3. Blood Donor Screeners speak with each blood donor prior to them checking in at the blood drive.  They screen them by asking Covid-19 screening questions and by taking their temperature.  When deemed that the donor is safe to donate., the screener directs them to the greeter station.

    4. Facility Screeners work at the Durham Facility screening (Covid-19) employees, volunteers, vendors and clients before they can enter the building. This step is one more role that supports a safe and adequate blood supply.  QUALIFICATIONS

    These positions do not require a degree.  They will be trained virtually and on site by our staff. Candidates must be 18 years or older.   ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Candidates should be able to provide friendly customer service, good written and verbal communication, and able to stand for 3-4-hour shifts.  Transportation Specialists must have a valid NC License with a clean driving record (we provide Red Cross Car) and be able to lift 45 pounds. 

    PREFERRED SCHEDULE

    Candidates will work a varied schedule day to day of the 4 positions listed with flexibility to meet their availability. Scheduling could include weekdays and weekends with some shifts that begin at 6am. Other shifts will include day time hours and some evening hours. These (2) positions are 20 hours/week for 6 months.
